Personal Protective Equipment

(Yes, you can wear too much PPE!)

The purpose of radiological personal protective clothing and equipment is to keep radioactive contamination out of your body and off of your body and to reduce the amount of exposure to radiation you receive.  This section will cover the clothing worn in most laboratory situations, fume hoods, and the principles of time, distance, and shielding.

Clothing

Radiological protective clothing varies from air fed hoods and wet suits to gloves and lab coats.  We rely mostly on the latter for protection in the research laboratory setting as only relatively small quantities of radioactive material are used.

Gloves

Protect hands from contamination.

Protect against ingestion of contamination.

Serve as a reminder to be careful.

Gloves are the first line of defense against skin contamination!

Try This Practical Method for Safe Glove Changes

Putting Gloves On:

Ensure the glove is your size and suitable for the chemical form you are going to be using.

Visually inspect glove for damage.

Hold end of glove closed and squeeze air into areas of the glove looking for pin hole leaks.

Don gloves if they are undamaged.

To Remove Gloves:

Grab the inner wrist of the first glove on the outside surface of the glove.

Pull the glove off without letting it go.

Remove the second glove by inserting finger under the second glove at the outside of the wrist.

Pull glove inside out and off - over the glove you are still holding.

Dispose of gloves.

Lab Coats

Lab coats protect you and your clothing from radioactive contamination.  They should be worn whenever you handle radioactive material and they should be buttoned or zipped closed!

Yes, this is basic, but how many times have you rushed to do something and left your lab coat on a hanger?

Don’t! We would hate to have your jeans and t-shirt bagged and tagged in our waste room!

Eye Protection

For protection against the chemical and radiation hazards associated with radioactive material use - wear your goggles or put a shield between you and your experiment!

Do you know how hard it is to get P-32 out of here???

Do you want to wait until it decays away in your eye?

Wear the proper protection!
