Chapter Five
“Hello, my darling,” Christian whispered into Satine’s hair
as he pulled her into a warm hug.
“Christian…” Satine sighed into his neck.
They parted, and looked into each other’s eyes. For the
first time, Satine did not want to kiss him, because she knew that would make
what had to be said even more difficult. But Christian leaned in and lightly
caressed Satine’s lips with his own, pulling her into his world. They drew
apart, and sat down at the round table covered in a brightly colored cloth
underneath the
“Christian, this is so beautiful…Thank you for the
wonderful idea. I can’t begin to explain what it means to me.”
“Of course. I knew you loved it here, and I knew that you
could find a way to come, too…So thank you, my sweet.”
Satine smiled and blushed, as they began their evening.
Christian and Satine ate a most delectable meal, of French delights and wine.
Neither of them had ever known such bliss in an evening such as that, when they
both had everything they desired. The sunset had a brilliant serenity to it,
and put all the emotions Satine was feeling into one glance.
“Satine…Hello, anyone there?” Christian said with the smile
he had on his face when poking fun at Satine. He waved his hand in front of her
eyes, which seemed to be somewhere far away.
“Oh! Oh, I-I’m sorry Christian, I’m just…thinking, is all.”
“W-…Do you want to talk about it?” Christian said,
concerned, as he put his hand over Satine’s and stroked it gently.
“Um…Let’s take a walk, Christian.”
Christian stood up, and offered his hand to Satine who took
it hesitantly, yet graciously at the same time. They began strolling down the
path under the
“Oh, Christian…oh, look at all the stars…Do you think
there’s one star for everyone in the entire world?”
“I don’t know…maybe they’re all for you, sweetheart.”
Satine looked back at Christian with a smile on her face
that could light up
“You…oh, you’re too good to me.”
“Now that could never be possible!”
The two laughed and after a moment, Satine took her arm
from Christian’s. She stopped walking, and the smile slowly faded from her
face. All the horrible thoughts of the day came to her again, as she realized
the truth of what she was about to say. She felt tears well up in her eyes, but
she held them back as best as she could.
“C-…Christian, I need to tell you something.”
“What is it, darling?”
Christian put his warm hand on the side of Satine’s rosy
cheek. She turned her head the other way, and spoke the words she dreaded for
days.
“We need to end it. Everyone knows…Harold knows. Sooner or
later, the Duke will find out, too.”
Christian’s hand slowly made its way back to his side, as
his eyes drifted from Satine’s pain-stricken face. The realization of what she
had just said hit Christian like a bullet to his heart. He couldn’t move, or
think for a split second. But then, his love took over, and he had to convince
her to change her mind.
“No…no, it’ll be all right. I-I’ll write a song, a-and
we’ll put it in the show, and whenever you hum it, or-or sing it, or whistle
it, y-you’ll know that we still love one another, and…it’ll be ok, I promise…”
Christian took Satine’s cold hands into his own shaky, yet
warm ones, and caressed them comfortingly.
“Things don’t work that way, Christian…We have to end it.”
She began walking away from Christian, with tears already
falling down her cheeks. Christian began to think. He thought of the words that
came to him when remembering all the wonderful things about his love. He loved
her more than words could express…so he sang what was in his heart.
“Never knew…I could feel like this…”
Satine’s walk slowed to a complete stop, but she still
faced away from Christian’s longing voice.
“Like I’ve never seen the sky…before…Want to vanish inside
your kiss…”
Christian walked towards Satine, and when he reached her,
he slid his loving hands on both sides of her waist. He sang quietly into her
hair the song in his soul. She looked up at the bright sky full of stars once
again, with tears in her eyes.
“Every day I love you more and more…Listen to my heart, can
you hear it sing? Telling me to give you everything…”
He slowly turned Satine around to face him. Satine’s heart
was breaking in two, but she knew that deep down inside, she could not go
through with the promise she had made herself. Her love was too strong.
Christian continued his beautiful words.
“Seasons may change, winter to spring…But I love you…Until
the end of time…Come what may…come what may…”
Christian sang with a twinkle in his eye, knowing that
Satine was part of him. Satine knew that he was part of her too, and would
never let that go, for as long as she lived. This was the thought that occurred
to her which convinced her that all she needed was love, love lifted her up
where she belonged, and she then knew the greatest thing she’ll ever learn. She
couldn’t leave him. Satine sang with her love, in perfect harmony.
“I will love you…until my dying day.”
