Chapter Four

A few nights had gone by, of the same sneaking around and being so in love that Satine continued to post-pone the inevitable. She knew she had to tell him what she did not even want to believe herself. It was over. Satine sat down at her mirror, and sighed heavily. She wiped the lipstick that was smeared all over her lips from Christian’s passionate goodnight kiss.

“This is it, Satine…you have to tell him.”

She promised herself that at their next secret meeting, she would tell him that the relationship was through. Just thinking those words, broke her heart. Her stomach lurched, as a delicate sob forced its way out of her mouth. She sang softly to herself.

“Yesterday…all my troubles seemed so far away…”

She looked at her own eyes in the mirror, and saw how they had changed since what seemed like ages ago.

          “Now it looks…as though they’re here to stay…Oh, I believe…”

Her voice faded to a whisper.

          “…in yesterday…”

Her eyes tore away from the mirror and her hands wiped the tears from her cheeks. She took a couple deep breaths, and continued to sing helplessly.

“Yesterday…love was such an easy game to play…

Now I need a place to hide away…
Oh, I believe…in…yesterday…”

Satine finished her thoughts and then her watery eyes noticed something that she hadn’t left on her dresser before. It was a note…from Christian. She stood up and walked over to the dresser. It was sealed with a red-heart stamp and a kiss. She could tell it was sealed with his lips. She put the note to her nose, and let the sweet scent of coffee and Christian enter her heart. She delicately opened the letter.

Dearest Satine,

When you read this letter, I’m guessing that we have just spent the wonderful evening together, once again. God, Satine. I wish I could spend every moment of my day with you…but I could also spend this entire letter talking about you. So, I will tell you my plan. When? Tomorrow night. Where? Le Tour Eiffel…Yes, my darling, I want to meet you at the Eiffel Tower for dinner and a walk under the stars. I know exactly what you’re thinking right now. How? Well, you’re quite a talented actress, my sweet. And wasn’t your sister going to visit you one of these days? Well, that’s who you’re going to be “visiting” tomorrow, alright? Oh, sweetheart, I hope this works. Now…you may have one last question. Why? Because I love you.

        With undying love, Christian

Satine closed her eyes, and could not help but smile at the beautiful words that were written in front of her. But the smile slowly faded as she recalled what she had just promised herself. She can’t go on living like this. It all had to end.

It was the next evening, and Christian was riding the train to the Eiffel Tower, where he was to meet his love at 8:00. There was a brilliant, gleaming smile that hadn’t left his face the entire day, just from thinking about the following evening. As the train halted for the last time before arriving at the Tower, Christian breathed in sharply, and looked away from the window as he coughed a few times.

After it had passed, he returned to his gaze out the window of beautiful Paris. He remembered first arriving there, not coming even close to knowing what it had in store for him. He had come to write of love, without even knowing what love was. He now knew, because of Satine. And Christian planned to live it for as long as fate allowed.

Satine was finally about to leave her room, and as she turned around ready to walk out the door, Harold Zidler stood in the doorway.

“Harold!!…Oh, God, you frightened me. Well…I’m off. I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow morning.”

“Where exactly are you off to, chickpea? I came here to tell you that the rehearsal is actually at 6:30 instead of 7:00 tomorrow morning, because of the amount of work we must get done. I sincerely hope this trip of yours doesn’t include staying out too late.”

“Harold, you treat me like a teenager, honestly! I’m going to visit my sister who’s back in Paris…She’s only here for one night, you know. So, I must be off, I can’t keep her waiting.”

Satine briskly walked past Harold and began her walk towards the exit.

“Satine…”

She sighed, and turned around, putting on her, “I’m annoyed and late” face.

“…Wish her well for me.”

Satine smiled, and changed her expression to more of a “but of course, darling” face.

“Yes…I will.”

The train ride was bumpy and dark. Satine stared hopelessly out the window, dreading the truth to come. She decided she had thought enough of the horrible feeling she had inside her of saying goodbye to Christian. So, she forced it out of her mind, and made herself focus on something else. A young woman and her husband sat across the seat from her. They were whispering sweet nothings into each other’s ears, and giggling quietly.

“That isn’t helping…” thought Satine, looking away from the couple.

She spotted a little girl, not more than 6, on the dirty car floor. She had sandy blond hair, and innocent hazel eyes. Satine leaned forward in her seat, and gained curiosity over what the child was so interested in.

“What are you doing, my young friend?”

“Hi! I’m playing…don’t you like to play?”

“I love it! Whoever doesn’t like playing probably lost their mind.”

Satine laughed along with the girl, who then pointed to Satine’s long blaze-red hair.

“Your hair is so pretty…is that a clip? I wish I could wear clips, but mommy says I’m too little.”

“Oh, yes, this?…This is a clip my very good friend brought me…”

Satine pulled the clip gently out of her hair.

“Would you like to try it on?”

“Oh, yes!…Oh, I love it! I wish I was big, and could wear clips and be pretty like you…”

“Don’t ever say that, you…are beautiful. Listen…now don’t tell your mummy, but…would you like to keep that clip?”

The girl’s hazel eyes lit up like the sky on a clear morning.

“But…but what about your friend? Won’t they be mad that you gave it away?”

“Not this friend…he would be glad that you have it.”

Satine and her new friend talked about the wonderful little things in life for the remainder of the train ride, and when the train arrived at the Tower, they bid a playful farewell. Satine sighed and made her way outside, as that cold horrible feeling hit her once again. Her mind drifted back to the truth to come, as memories of carefree, innocent childhood were also drifting through her soul at the same time, while walking towards the Tower.

“Yesterday…all my troubles seemed to far…away…”

Satine saw her love wave a sweet hello, and caught Christian’s eye twinkle in the setting sun, from the table directly underneath the Eiffel Tower.
