QUARTERFINALS

MONTOUR

vs.

KITTANNING

THURSDAY, MARCH 9TH, 2006

ISLAND SPORTS CENTER - 8:40PM

#4 MONTOUR PREPARES FOR #5 KITTANNING

DEJA VU? ALMOST.

Team Montour locked up the #4 seed and a first round bye heading into the playoffs. Montour will now play at home on March 9th at 8:40PM versus Kittanning (who defeated Moon in round one by the score of 6-2 on March 2nd).

Montour and Kittanning will meet in the quarterfinals for the second time in the past three years.

[When the puck drops on March 9th, Montour and Kittanning will have met in the Playoffs 3 of the past 4 years. Montour also played versus Kittanning at The Belmont in the First Round of 2003 Penguin Cup Playoffs.]

The teams are now nearly completely different since that unforgettable and classic meeting at The Belmont in the 2004 Penguin Cup Playoffs but you can't help to look at the eerily similar situation comparing the two playoff scenarios.

In 2004, Montour defeated Moon to reach the quarterfinals to play at The Belmont in Kittanning. This year Kittanning defeated Moon to reach the quarterfinals and rights to play Montour at the Island. Is this simple coincidence or foreshadowing for another great playoff game between these two consistent hockey programs? Only time will tell. This time it's Montour that is the higher seed and this time it will take place at the Island Sports Center.

FOR THE MONTOUR FAITHFUL I HAVE DUG THIS ONE OUT FROM THE MSA ARCHIVES SO CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO THAT CLASSIC PLAYOFF GAME BACK IN 2004.

MONTOUR vs. WEST ALLEGHENY

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24th, 2006 - ISC - 8:30 PM

ISLAND SPORTS CENTER -- Montour lost to visiting West Allegheny by the score of 4-0 on Friday night at the Island Sports Center. Please check back soon for more details.
GAME PREVIEW--Montour and West Allegheny meet up for what will be another battle tonight at the Island Sports Center. Both teams are coming off great comeback efforts that occurred last night.

The Spartans came back from a three goal deficit last night to tie Greensburg Central Catholic at Kirk Nevin Ice Arena behind a natural hat trick from Zach Perry in the third period. Meanwhile, West Allegheny trailed Peters Township last night at the Airport Ice Arena in the third period by a three goal defecit as well. As fast as you could say Jack Robinson, West A stormed back to tie the game late and  Ryne Savisky won the game for the Indians in overtime.

Montour gave West Allegheny its only defeat of the season back on February 2nd in a convincing 5-1 victory at the Airport Ice Arena in which the Montour defense and freshman goaltender Matt Skoff played remarkably well.

MONTOUR vs. GREENSBURG CC

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23rd, 2006 - KN - 7:30 PM

Team Montour (14-5-1) & Greensburg Central Catholic (11-7-2) battled to a 4-4 tie Thursday night at the Kirk Nevin Ice Arena. Montour found itself trailing 4-1 with just over seven minutes remaining. Suddenly it was as if a light was flicked on and Zach Perry feasted upon the Greensburg Central defense.

Senior forward Zach Perry notched the natural hat trick (his 25th, 26th, and 27th goals of the year) in those seven minutes to give the Spartans a crucial point in the PIHL standings. Perry scored in dramatic fashion with only 19 seconds remaining in regulation and sent the game into overtime. Senior Jeff Peters scored the Spartans' first goal of the game, his 7th of the year.

Team Montour will play again on Friday night in its regular season finale at home at the Island Sports Center at 8:30PM versus divisional rival West Allegheny (18-1-0), who is coming off a thrilling comeback, overtime win over Peters Township.

MONTOUR @ WEST ALLEGHENY

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2nd, 2006 - AIR - 7:00 PM

Montour said 'not so fast' in front of a packed house at the Airport Ice Arena. Team Montour handed previously unbeaten West Allegheny its first loss of the season in a convincing win Thursday night and kept its hopes of another division title alive.

Suitably on Groundhog Day (like the movie) Montour went through repetition as if it were Bill Murray, putting puck after puck into the opposition's net.

The light was on for Montour tonight and the light shined bright as it dominated from the get-go and stifled the highly powered West Allegheny offense in the neutral zone. Montour jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back.

Montour goaltender Matt Skoff did his best imitation of Stonewall Jackson stopping 24 of 25 West Allegheny shots and made some great sprawling saves which frustrated the Indians.

Josh York started the scoring for Montour on the power play in the first period as he took a cross ice pass from Zach Perry and roofed it past West Allegheny goaltender Kyle Mortimer. Give credit to Aaron Siegel with the assist on the goal as well. Skoff weathered an early first period West Allegheny storm and the rest was history.

Keith Kurelis scored the important goal (his 7th of the season) to make it 2-0 early in the second period and gave the Spartans the momentum with credit to Mario Victor for the assist.

Zach Perry gave Montour a huge boost with his 22nd goal of the season as he took a setup pass from linemate Paul Ciotti, walked out of the corner, and slapped a shot past Mortimer for the 3-0 Team Montour lead.

West A would answer back just before the end of the second with a power play goal of their own as Steve Sarachine put home his own rebound past Skoff to pull the Indians within two at the end of two. However, Montour would not falter and Zach Perry made the Indians pay with a blast from the top of the right circle just 17 seconds into the 3rd period and deflated any hopes of an Indian comeback. The goal was Perry's 23rd of the season as he took a lead pass from Kevin Bishop and deposited it to the back of West Allegheny's net.

The Montour defense of Josh York, Kevin Bishop, Aaron Siegel, Andy Millick, & Alex Wayne (who should be commended for their efforts) clamped shut while the Spartan forwards back-checked and stifled the Indians the rest of the way. Montour buckled down and did a great job on the penalty kill. Montour found themselves on the short end of a 5 on 3 late in the game but did a great job to ensure that West Allegheny would not capitalize. Josh York, Kevin Bishop, and Mario Victor would seal the West A fate as they all dug down and killed the remainder of the 5 on 3.

Spartan forward Paul Ciotti sent Elvis and the West A fans packing for home with an empty-net goal to give the Spartans a convincing 5-1 victory.

These two teams meet up again on 2.24.06 at the Island Sports Center for Montour's regular season finale.

MSA PRE-GAME SHOW BEGINS AT 7:00 PM!

Montour (13-3) picked up an important win versus visiting Thomas Jefferson (9-7-0) on Monday night at the Island Sports Center. Montour got some timely goal scoring and played solid defense to pick up its 13th win on the season.

Paul Ciotti added two crucial goals (his 9th and 10th of the year) for Team Montour while Zach Perry roofed a wrister for his 21st goal of the year.

Ciotti's first goal came just after TJ's Brock Heinauer gave the Jaguars a 1-0 lead. Southerlin and Perry picked up the assists. Perry moved the puck to Southerlin from behind the net and Southerlin found Ciotti in front for the goal.

Only a few seconds after the Ciotti goal, Dan Butler scored a big goal from the right side with the game tied and wristed the puck past TJ goaltender Cody Krynock from the tough angle and gave Montour the 2-1 lead at the end of two. Butler's goal was assisted by Keith Kurelis and Mario Victor and fired up the Spartans heading into the third period.

With the game tied at two, Aaron Siegel made a great play to keep the puck inside the blue line. Siegel threw a puck on net. Craynock had trouble controlling the puck that gave Zach Perry two cracks at the puck in front of the net but both were robbed by Craynock. However, Ciotti jumped on the rebound and buried his second goal of the night to give Montour the 3-2 lead.

Defenseman Kevin Bishop had a nice looking goal in the third period. After skating down the left side, Bishop snapped a shot short side that gave Montour a comfortable 2 goal cushion.

Sophomore defenseman Josh York played a stellar game. York moved the puck well out of the zone and constantly pressured and frustrated the TJ forwards.

A minute later, Perry would finish the scoring as he roofed a shot after shaking a defender. Give credit to Ciotti on the assist.

TJ's Brock Heinauer gave Montour some fits with his speed as he split the Montour defense and scored over the shoulder of Montour goalie Matt Skoff to put Thomas Jefferson up 1-0 in the second period. Heinauer setup a power play goal for TJ early in the third to tie the game at two. Heinauer circled the net and found Corey Joseph at the right point. Joseph put the shot on net and Ian Connelly deflected the shot past Skoff from in front.

MONTOUR vs. KITTANNING

FRIDAY, DEC. 16th, 2005 - ISC - 8:15 PM

ISLAND SPORTS CENTER -- Montour continued its amazing run and improved its record to 9-0 tonight at the Island Sports Center with a solid 5-1 win over visiting Kittanning.

Montour took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on a Kevin Bishop shot from the top of the slot. On the play, Josh York carried the puck into the Kittanning zone and fed it to Paul Ciotti. Ciotti then centered to Bishop who wristed it past Kittaning goaltender Joseph Mercurio.

Montour came out strong in the second period and put 15 shots on Kittanning and broke the game open with 3 goals. Aaron Siegel blasted a shot from the point to give Montour a 2-0 lead. The play developed from nice puck movement from Jeff Peters and Paul Ciotti.

Kittanning answered back and cut its deficit in half as Nicholas Troup rebounded his initial shot and put it in the back of the Montour net behind goaltender Matt Skoff. Skoff rebounded well and stopped the remainder of the shots he faced. Skoff stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced.

Montour regained its two goal lead as Zach Perry slapped a shot past Mercurio for his 15th goal of the season with assists going to Josh York and Adam Rizza.

The game-breaking goal came when Andy Millick possessed the puck in the neutral zone with just under 5 seconds to play in the second period. Millick skated the puck just inside the blue line and put a nice slap shot on the Kittanning net. The puck was stopped by Mercurio but definitely caught him off guard. The puck bounced into the air and slid into the net with just 0.3 seconds remaining which gave Montour a 4-1 lead at the end of two.

Montour played a tough third period and the defense held Kittanning to just six shots on goal for the period. Josh York collected his third point of the night as he tallied another assist on a Keith Kurelis goal that gave Montour the final 5-1 victory.

MONTOUR @ MOON

MONDAY, DEC. 12th, 2005 - AIR - 9:00 PM

AIRPORT ICE ARENA -- Team Montour improved to 8-0 on the season with a 2-1 win tonight at Moon. Moon took an early 1-0 lead when Matthew Reese took an initial shot from the point and Zach Smith deflected the puck in front of the Montour net to put it past Montour goaltender Nick Gialloreto.

Near the end of the first period Zach Perry scored his 14th goal of the year (7th power play goal) on a nice slap shot just inside the blue line to tie the game at one on the power play. Josh York dished a nice pass to the blade of Perry and slapped it past the low stick side of Moon goalie Matthew Wynn.

The choppy game continued when out of nowhere Keith Kurelis took a lead pass from Kevin Bishop was off for a breakaway. Wynn came out to play the puck and sticked it away but found himself out of position. Kurelis hopped on the loose puck again and slapped it into the empty net to give Montour the 2-1 lead.

Montour and Moon battled down the stretch. Nick Gialloreto made several key saves and helped Montour to a perfect 8-0 record.

MONTOUR vs. CHARTIERS VALLEY

THURSDAY, DEC. 1st, 2005 - AIR - 9:00 PM

Montour Improves to 6-0

AIRPORT ICE ARENA -- Montour and Chartiers Valley met for the first time since last year's spectacular double overtime playoff game and this year's version didn't disappoint the fan faithful as well. You can throw aside any team differentials out the window whenever these two teams meet. Both of these teams always come out ready to play with a vengeance in what has become a huge rivalry game that is only separated by a few miles of highway.

This time it was Montour who prevailed by the score of 5-2. However, Montour had to survive a second period Chartier's Valley flurry in order to improve to a perfect 6-0 on the season.

Montour scored early on a nice backhand in the slot from Zach Perry. Perry dug the puck free after Jeff Peters and Paul Ciotti made a great effort to keep the puck in the zone. Perry skated in front of the CV net and backhanded one under the arm of goaltender Mike Evangelista to give Montour the early 1-0 lead. Montour looked to go up 2-0 but Greg Clarke hit the post.

The game would remain 1-0 until 10:51 of second period, when CV failed to clear a puck and Kevin Bishop made a great play to keep the zone. Adam Rizza hopped on the puck and wristed a shot from the top of the circle that sailed top shelf for the 2-0 Montour lead.

Chartiers Valley Coach Paul Bonetti would call a time out to regroup the Colts and it worked rightfully so. Chartiers Valley would not falter and scored two quick goals by Joe Michelucci and Ed Olczyk within a 40 second span to tie the game and sent both teams to the locker room tied at two.

Chartiers Valley had a chance to go up 3-2, but freshman netminder Matt Skoff made a brilliant, sprawling pad save with 7 minutes remaining to keep the score tied at two and inevitably changed the outcome of the game. [Skoff stopped 22 of 24 shots on the night.] Montour came right back down the ice and Josh York one-timed a slick snap shot into the CV net off a pass from Perry, and gave Montour the crucial 3-2 lead.

A few moments later, Zach Perry gave the Spartans a 4-2 lead when he leaned into a slap shot from 20 feet out and ripped it past Evangelista for his second goal of the game. Montour would complete the scoring as Mario Victor would slam in a rebound to give Montour the 5-2 victory and his first goal as a Montour Spartan.

GAME 5

MONTOUR vs. AMBRIDGE

BLADERUNNERS', CRANBERRY -- Montour improved to 5-0 with a 6-2 win at Ambridge and is currently tied with West Allegheny atop the West Division. Montour got scoring from 6 different players for the solid and convincing team win.

Montour peppered Ambridge goaltender Scott Robinski with 40 shots but Robinski was able to make 34 saves on the day.

However, the reliable Montour Doomsday Defense (M.D.D) clamped shut the Bridgers offense and limited Ambridge to just 10 shots in front of Spartan goaltender Nick Gialloreto, who picked up his 3rd win of the season. Kevin Bishop, Josh York, Aaron Siegel, Andy Millick, & Alex Wayne put forth a great effort to shut down Ambridge.

Senior forward Jeff Peters picked up a pair of goals while Zach Perry added his team leading 10th goal of the season. Paul Ciotti and Alex Wayne each had a goal and assist and added to the Spartans scoring.

Adam Rizza tallied his 4th goal of the young season while Keith Kurelis and Josh Spano each notched 2 assists. Defenseman Andy Millick picked up an assist and has had a point in each of his 5 games with Montour.

GAME 4

6 2
MONTOUR vs. MOON

ISLAND SPORTS CENTER -- Montour found itself down 2-0 early versus Moon on Monday night however, that is when the Spartans kicked it into full gear and stormed back to an impressive 6-2 win. The win improved Team Montour's record to a perfect 4-0 start to the season.

Moon got out to the early lead behind two goals by Joe DiNardo. However, it was not nearly enough as Montour responded and dented the scoreboard often.

Defenseman Kevin Bishop put Montour on the scoreboard on the power play with props to Paul Ciotti on the assist. Senior Zach Perry continued his scoring streak as he tallied his 9th of the year to tie the game at two. It was Ciotti that would put Montour ahead for good off an assist from defenseman Andy Millick. Montour had completed the comeback and did not stop.

In the third period, Adam Rizza found the back of the net twice in which Keith Kurelis and Aaron Siegel got assists. Ciotti added another goal as Zach Perry moved the puck over and Ciotti notched his second goal of the game as well.

Freshman goaltender Matt Skoff played well again in net and picked up another win for the jumpstarted Spartans. Montour will next play versus Ambridge on Friday, November 18th -- 7:30 PM at the Bladerunners' in Cranberry.

MONTOUR vs. ELIZABETH FORWARD

MON., NOV. 7th, 2005 - ISC - 9:15 PM

ISLAND SPORTS CENTER -- Montour impressed the large crowd for its home opener with a solid 4-1 win over visiting Elizabeth Forward tonight. Senior Zach Perry netted the hat trick for Montour as Paul Ciotti scored and added 2 assists to help lead Montour to its 2-0 overall record.

Elizabeth Forward opened the scoring early in the first period but Montour would counter with four unanswered goals for the 4-1 final.

Montour's first goal came with just under 3 minutes to play when Zach Perry possessed the puck near the right face off circle, skated in and roofed a shot past Elizabeth Forward goaltender Michael Cole. Josh York and Paul Ciotti would get the assists on Perry's first goal. However, Cole wade two brilliant saves on Jeff Peters in the first period and kept Elizabeth Forward within striking distance at the end of one. Cole would stop 36 of the 40 Montour shots on goal.

The game remained tied until late in the second period when Montour struck again. Defenseman Andy Millick took a nice shot from the point which bounced out to the slot. Zach Perry hopped on the rebound and slapped in a one timer to give Montour the 2-1 lead heading into the second intermission.

Late in the third, Aaron Siegel worked the puck down low to Paul Ciotti. Ciotti then threw the puck to Perry. Perry skated across the slot and finished the play with a nice wrist shot over the right, short-side shoulder of Cole for the hat trick. Ciotti finished the scoring a minute later with an empty net goal and sent Elizabeth Forward packing their bags for home.

The Montour defense glued shut the Elizabeth Forward offense in front of goaltender Nick Gialloreto and limited Elizabeth Forward to just 15 shots on goal.

GAME 1 - 2005-2006 SEASON
4 2

MONTOUR @ CANON McMILLAN

THURSDAY, NOV. 4th, 2005 @ SOUTHPOINTE - 8:20 PM
"DO OR DO NOT THERE IS NO TRY."

MONTOUR TURNS ASIDE CM BEHIND SKOFF & PERRY.

ICEOPLEX - SOUTHPOINTE -- I last left Team Montour following last season's emotional and gut-wrenching loss at the ISC this past March, leaving nothing but the utmost respect for their team. With several members from the teams of the past witnessing, I was overwhelmed to see that Montour continued its winning tradition with a 4-2 win at Canon McMillan at the Iceoplex at Southpointe. A game that turned out the greatest that Western Pennsylvania Hockey had to offer with the likes of hockey fans, campouts, former All-Star players, and game reporters, Montour's offense scored consistently behind the solid defensive effort along with the goaltending of freshman Matt Skoff. Skoff would turn aside several early Canon McMillan scoring chances to give Montour the opening night win. Skoff played brilliantly and did all that was asked of him as Montour jumpstarted its scoring behind a Paul Ciotti goal early in the first period. However, CM's Jesse Patnesky scored with only 58 seconds remaining in the first period to tie the game at one.

Senior Zach Perry scored the first of his 2 goals with a nice snap shot off a one timer from point man Aaron Seigel on a beautiful set up on the power play to give Montour a crucial 2 - 1 lead. Zach Perry would score yet again to put Montour up 3-1 and diminish the hopes of Canon McMillan. The top line of Zach Perry, Paul Ciotti, and Jeff Peters generated some great scoring chances and lead Montour to a crucial season-opening win on the road.

Adam Rizza would dent the scoreboard for Montour and put away the game at 11:37 of the third period off a nice pass from Josh Spano to give Montour a seemingly insurmountable 4-1 lead.. Justin Cormack of Canon McMillan would do all he could to make the score 4-2 with 6 minutes remaining in the third, however it was for not as Montour would hang on for the upset and defeat the #3 ranked Big Macs in the opener.
