Mami was one of the foremost singers of Rai when it came out
into the open in 1985-86. Rai is a music style mixing modern,
western rythmes and technology with a traditional music line.
It grew out of Oran in north-western Algeria, and has reached
all corners of the world. Its
origin lies in older religious tradiotions, connected to Sufism
and female cult around popular religious shrines. Today the
main subject of this popular singing is problems of the everyday
life. Rai has been the object of world attention more than any
other form of Arabic music. |

Khaled is undoubtadly the leader of Rai music in the world.
He was born in Oran in 1960 and started music activities from
his early years. In 1990 he moved to France, from where he launched
his international career. He introduced rai music to the French
people and through it, he earned a worldwide reputation. His
music continued to develop, and elements like jazz and hip hop
were added to it. Of special interest among these 4 songs is
El Harba Wine, which he sings with
the Indian pop star Amar. In this song tablas meet darboukas,
while Khaled trades verses with Amar in an extrememly danceable
Bollywood-Esque tune.
