| King's Highway 169 |
| Hwy 169 was an important highway that was part of an important link from eastern Ontario to Gravenhurst, and Gravenhurst to Parry Sound and Sudbury. It ran from Hwy 12 north of Brechin north to Hwy 69 at Foot's Bay. It ran concurrently with Hwy 11 for 19 kilometres. Prior to 1976, Hwy 169 was a part of Hwy 69. Despite Hwy 169's importance, it was downloaded completely in 1998. |

| Highway 169 was the main highway through Bala, a major tourist area of Muskoka during the summer. Highway 169 could be used to access Bala from Gravenhurst and points east and north, as well as from Parry Sound and Sudbury (via Hwy 69). Bala is accessed from Toronto via Muskoka Road 38 (formerly Hwy 660) from Hwy 400. This is a view of Highway 169 northbound onto the bridge over the Bala Falls in Bala, just north of the Muskoka Road 38 junction. This photo was taken in July 1997, just months before the highway was downloaded. Highway 169 shields were removed very quickly after downloading, and this section is now known as Muskoka Road 169, and also as the Frank Miller Memorial Route. Note also that the Highway 169 shield at right is one of the newer shield types, without "The King's Highway" legend on top. The lighting on the bridge is the typical Department of Highways lighting used on provincial highways during the 1950s, which has been since been replaced by Muskoka with more tourist-friendly lights. | In November 2001, the District Municipality of Muskoka officially designated part of Muskoka Road 169 (formerly Highway 169) as the Frank Miller Memorial Route, in memory of former Ontario Premier Frank Miller. The route runs in a circle around Lake Muskoka, following Muskoka Roads 169, 26, 118 West, 15, 118 West (again), 17, and 18. These special route markers are posted along these roads, including this one on Highway 169 at Moon River Road, just north of Bala. Photo taken 14 July 2004. |
