Autoroute 5
Highways
A-5, also known as L'autoroute de a Gatineau, is the main north-south highway through the Gatineau region of Quebec, and connects Gatineau and Hull with Ottawa via the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge over the Ottawa River. The highway runs from this bridge north to sortie 21, north of Chelsea, roughly alongside the Gatineau River. The highway continues northward from there as Route 105.

The Macdonald-Cartier Bridge, which marks the southern terminus of Autoroute 5. This bridge, which crosses the Ottawa River, is a vital economic link between Hull and Gatineau, Quebec with Ottawa, Ontario. This bridge, which opened in 1965, is not directly connected to Ontario's Highway 417, which means that motorists must travel on congested city streets in Ottawa to access the highway from A-5 coming into Ontario. The bridge connects directly with King Edward Avenue, which takes you south to Rideau Street (formerly Highway 17B), then west to Nicholas Street, which connects directly with Highway 417. In the immediate foreground is the Alexandria Interprovincial bridge, a much older bridge linking Ontario and Quebec.
