King's Highway 17B
Highways
Hwy 17B is a collection of business routes that are meant to help motorists get from Hwy 17 into the downtown areas of bypassed towns, and back again. There used to be five Hwy 17B routes in Ontario, but due to downloading, there are only two left. They are in Sault Ste. Marie and Thessalon. Hwy 17B in Sault Ste. Marie also connects Hwy 17 with the International Bridge to I-75 in Michigan.
King's Highway 17B crown
The three Highway 17B routes that were downloaded in the late 1990s were in Thunder Bay, North Bay, and Ottawa. Ottawa's Hwy 17B connected the downtown area with the Queensway at the east and west ends. Since Hwy 17B was created before part of the Queensway became Hwy 417, only one end of Hwy 17B actually connected with Hwy 17, at the east end. This photo looks eastbound along Hwy 17B (Rideau Street) from Sussex Drive towards Nicholas Street in the City of Ottawa. Photo taken 26 November 2003.

Highway 17B (Rideau Street) looking westbound towards Elgin Street in the City of Ottawa. Hwy 17B was decommissioned through Ottawa in 1998, and there is no evidence remaining throughout Downtown Ottawa that the highway ever existed at the time this photo was taken. Photo taken 26 November 2003.
Highway 17B (Wellington Street) looking westbound from Elgin Street in the City of Ottawa. Up ahead at the traffic lights in the background is where westbound Hwy 17B turned south onto O'Connor Street. Eastbound Hwy 17B traffic used Kent Street, since Kent and O'Connor are one-way streets. Also up ahead, on the right, are the Parliament Buildings. Photo taken 26 November 2003.
