3DD's new album is great and almost as good as their first. They are definitely a great rock band. Also if you can you should check out their two unreleased tracks from Away From The Sun on the When I'm Gone single disc ($10). It has Changes and a song called Living This Lie and another called Pop Song which is very Metallica-esque on some of the riffs.3DD rocks!!

This band isn't 3dd or 3d, it's 1/2d. I would have given it a 1d for one dimensional, but they can't even crawl that high. The only reason this band exists is because some greddy record executive picked up an Eddie Vedder hair sample off his chair and decided to give it to geneticists in order to manufacturer clone variants like Matchboxtoomany, Crud, Bush, STP, WeedGarden, Nickelback, Default, Theory of a Deadbeat, and 3 Dorks with Down so they can give stupid people what they want: stupid "music".

Personally, I got tired of hearing all this self indulgent whiney Seattle "I'm a loser and I got dumped" angst the minute it came out in the early 1990's. These ugly raspy constipated sounding morons could actually learn how to write and sing songs if they included more fiber in their diets.

THREE DOORS DOWN (2000)

(reviewed by Kevin Baker)

In 2000, Three Doors Down released it's 1st cd. What a bland sentence. How appropriate. Or was it 1999? Someone tell me, please. But no matter when it came out, it's still appropriate. Maybe that's being a bit too harsh. However, this one really seems to be mired down in the land of Generica. Too much grungey sounds and too little memorable songwriting. I have extremely mixed feelings about this one. The high points are awesome, but the low points...ouch. Those ones hit rock bottom and then proceed to show signs of digging. But in good time.

The cd does start off with a bang in the form of their smash hit, Kryptonite. This may (or may not) be the best song on here. The guitar lines, while still recognizably post-grunge alternative, manage to avoid the Wastebin of Genericness by the grace of God.  I'm going to go ahead and say this now. This whole thing is really hard on lyrics. Maybe two songs sound in the least bit sincere. I have no doubt that Brad Arnold is capable of being exceptionally sincere and heartfelt. He really does have a great, soulful, Southern voice. His lyrical skills aren't poor per se but underdeveloped. With a little work, I'm sure we could get some better songs out of him. But this is not the case here.

However, Loser does work in the sincerity department. Mr. Arnold must be really familiar with self-doubt and self-hatred if he played any part in the arrangement of this one, because it does sound convincingly desperate. A little more lyrical maturity, and this guy could be awesome. The song is proof of that. From the opening backwards (I think anyways) guitar to the furious sounding midsection to the last anguished cries, we get a real pearl in a pile of manure here. Then we sink up to our necks in that same manure on the next one. Duck and Run gets my nod for worst tune on here. The words are stupid, the melody is abysmal...OK, the chorus is alright, and myabe it isn't quite that bad. Oh heck, yes it is. This one sounds like something Juan Cacahuate y sus Dedos Heridos would do. They are a (fictitous) grunge-mariachi band that has enjoyed some success as a party gag in my circle of friends. Actually, the music has no sound similar to mariachi, but it's a good comparison. Really abysmal modern noise.

However, Not Enough manages to sound a little lighter and actually has a good melody. Granted, the song has the sincerity of Michael Dukakis' promise not to raise taxes, but we won't hold that against it. Maybe it just sounds so good because of what it follows.  The fifth song is a bit of a quark; a ballad. Now this one is sincere. Let's face it; we all want to be famous or loved by everyone, etc. This one really is pretty good. Why didn't this babe get released as a single when that cruddy Duck and Run is on the Billboard charts as I type? Life ain't fair.

The following three songs aren't great. Heck, maybe not even good. Life Of My Own sounds like Not Enough. Insincere, but now an insincere self-ripoff. The title track is a grungey stomper with lyrics that are either about heaven or getting high. I'm not quite sure which. Meanwhile, Down Poison just strikes me as stupid.  However, they end on another three song run of much stronger material. By My Side is a very hard-hitting, butt-kicking ode to friendship (I think...don't go Dylanesque if you don't have the vocal quality to make it work). No matter what it's about, it sounds semi-original if nothing else. Smack is great. It's basically an anti-drug song, and it kicks all kinds of butts in it's short running time. Finally, we close with a love song, So I Need You. That one has a modicum of sincerity in it, and I love the line about jumping of the Brooklyn Bridge. Maybe I'm just being affected by those last three songs, but I give this one a low 7. A VERY low 7 because of all the dreck, but the good songs on here really are something.

OVERALL RATING: 7

Man, i really dig "Loser". What an incredibly moody, atmospheric pop song. "Kryptonite" would be an enjoyable listen if it didnt suffer from Nirvana Nevermind Syndrome, i.e. getting played on every rock station in existance 12 times a day.
