PUNK IN DRUBLIC (1994)

(reviewed by Caleb Smith)

The classic, and usually considered the one NOFX album to own if you're going to own one. Yet the music here isn't much different from NOFX's other releases, it's just that this batch of songs is apparently their most consistent. I say apparently because there's a good deal of NOFX material I haven't heard. I'll wager, however, that this is their best album. It's some of the funniest, catchiest, and sometimes even the most emotional punk (power-pop) you'll hear. Sure, it doesn't contain the inspiring glory of The Clash, nor the raw bitterness of the Sex Pistols, but some of these songs you just can't deny.

The album starts off with "Linoleum," a straight up punk tune. Short, fast, and very catchy. I haven't mentioned the guitar tone yet though, NOFX has a very cool guitar tone, and it makes these songs all the more interesting. Anyway, the album continues in that style for a while and occasionally changes things up a bit (horns, changes in tempo) until "My Heart Is Yearning." A hilarious faux love song with some very nice melodies. Then we've got the excellent guitar-driven "Perfect Government" and the Jewish pride song "The Brews" to close out side 1. Side 2 starts out with the almost heavy metal "The Qwassitworsh" and continues along with more pop, more punk, some reggae, and even an acoustic closing number. There really isn't a bad song here, and not only is it ALL catchy, some of the more serious songs can really get to you if you let them.

Of course, if you have a bias against 90's punk, I'd advise you to stay away. This doesn't exactly sound like Green Day (whom I enjoy), but it's certainly more akin to that sound than it is to the classic punk of the 70's and 80's. Personally, I could give a damn. I find the album to be highly enjoyable, and it's a milestone for the band.

I HEARD THEY SUCK LIVE (1995)

(reviewed by Caleb Smith)

This hilariously titled album was released because of an overabundance of live bootlegs of the band, which according to the liner notes, sounded like they were recorded in a garbage can. For newcomers to the band, or for those who own only a little of NOFX's catalog (like me), it's a great album. For hardcore fans, it's not exactly essential, but it's still worth the money just to hear the band in a live setting. There's a pretty diverse song selection, you get some of the band's earlier, lesser-known material like "Six Pack Girls" and the slightly more recent stuff like "Linoleum" and "Bob."

There's even a cover song called "Nothing But A Nightmare," though I can't remember who originally played it. The highlight of the album, however, is not the music but the stage banter. The first track is actually nothing but the guys talking, and there's tons of other amusing dialogue scattered around the album, whether it's Fat Mike saying he's not punk enough to be spit upon or El Hefe claiming he can't play well because he jacked off before the concert. All in all it's a really fun listen, not exactly the punk equivalent of Live At Leeds, but still highly recommended.
