Luke ANH Sabre: Assembly

Introduction - Parts - Shaft- Emitter - Details - Assembly

First I took the two, tube parts of the clamp and slid them onto the main tube. I epoxied them in place. I used one of the rubber grips to determine their position before the glue set.

I then glued the end cap / D-ring assembly into place. If the rectangular hole for the emitter is at 12 o'clock the D-ring should point to 9 o'clock.

Next I glued the recharge sockets into place inside the tube.

Once the glue had set I capped the emitter end of the tube with the prepared black shampoo top.

I now mounted the emitter assembly in the rectangular hole prepared in the main tube for this purpose. This was a fiddly process requiring the use of a flat rat's tail file. Once in place I drilled small holes through the tube and emitter assembly and used small self-tapping screws to hold everything in place.

I now mounted the button assembly at 12 o'clock using another screw and lots of glue. The 'eye' was mounted in a similar method at 6 o'clock. I referenced my collected Graflex pictures frequently to determine the best position for these.

Next I glued the two pieces on cut metal key steel and the calculator bubble at 3 o'clock to create the clamp assembly.

Once set I added the 1" scored piece of chrome tape around the center of the clamp to cover the join. I also mounted the activation leaver on the side of the control using a small piece of scrap metal and plenty of epoxy.

I finished decorating the tube with a small screw at the emitter end, at 6 o'clock between the 2 small rectangular holes. I also set a small piece of aluminum with another screw at the 11 o'clock position, at the emitter end as I had observed in my reference photos.

Finally I attached the self-adhesive grips to the handle at the 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 o'clock positions.

How my first attempt at a Graflex sabre ended up - not bad for a first attempt?
