Heritage Certificate

Heritage Certificates may now be issued to qualified persons by the Marathon County Genealogy Society (MCGS) under a new program authorized by the board of directors. There are three different certificates - Pioneer, Early Settler and Century - depending upon your ancestor's earliest date of residence in Marathon County.

The Pioneer Certificate will be issued to persons whose ancestors were residing in Marathon County prior to 1861, Early Settler Certificates to persons whose ancestors were residing in Marathon County prior to 1881, and the Century Certificates to persons whose ancestors were residing in Marathon County at least 100 years ago.

Certificates may be issued in the name of another person, other than the applicant, such as a sibling, child or grandchild.

An application will be required and proof must be provided in the form of copies of documents establishing the fact claimed. Such documents include Census, Land, Church, School, Naturalization (including Declaration of Intent), Probate and Vital Records. A complete list is included with the application.

The application and instruction information regarding the Heritage Certificate is now available online. If you would prefer a packet mailed to you, please send a large self-addressed stamped envelope with your request to MCGS, PO Box 1512, Wausau, WI 54402-1512 or pick one up at one of our regular monthly meetings.

Courthouse Records

The members of the MCGS have been assisting the Marathon County Court House staff in keying in old vital records (births, marriages and deaths). We need people with typing or keyboarding skills. Minimal training needed and it will be provided. This is an ongoing project that may take several years. We meet at the courthouse on the last Monday evening of each month at 5:00 p.m. and work until 8:30 p.m. A long time commitment is not needed. We do one night at a time.

Cold Subway® sandwiches are available at 5:00 p.m.

If you would like to help, call Edith Carpenter-Neu at (715) 359-5686, or email her at, [email protected] Thank you.
