Overview
of Olympus
The beginning - optical technology and precision engineering
Olympus has its roots in Takachiho Seisakusho, which was founded in 1919 and
in that same year introduced Japan's first microscope. In 1936, we applied to
cameras the optical technology we had cultivated in our microscope business.
By that time, the domain of our business was essentially defined. Lenses and
optical technology generally, together with precision engineering, remain the
essential technologies that form the basis of Olympus today.
Medical technology
Olympus reached another milestone in 1950. A doctor researching stomach cancer
wondered if we might put our expertise in making microscopes and lenses to work
in developing a camera that could show the interior of the stomach. Thus did
Olympus create the world's first gastrocamera. This device, which would later
lead to the development of endoscopes, brought us into the new business field
of medical systems. Medical systems and health-related equipment, including
blood analyzer equipment and reagents, is now our largest division, Today, Olympus
has more than an 80 percent share of the world market for medical endoscopes.
Information technology
Futher, Olympus amassed precision technology through the manufacture of cameras,
and in 1969 applied that technology to the microcassette tape recorder. We also
developed high-quality microcassette tapes that are now used in answering machines.
These steps opened the door to another new field - informaion equipment. The
laser optical pickup system Olympus developed in 1980 was the world's first,
and in subsequent years it facilitated the global penetration of the music CD
and the CD-ROM for personal computers. That breakthrough also helped Olympus
develop and produce "Write Once, Read Many" (WORM) optical disc drives as well
as magneto-optical disc drives.

Olympus Hong Kong Ltd. , established in 1988, has expanded its operations into
Mainland China. Production facilities in Pan Yu and Shenzhen now serve as important
manufacturing bases, producing roughly 75% of all our cameras on a unit basis.
Taking advantage of a world-class trade port and the rapidly growing economies
of neighboring countires, Olympus Hong Kong is expected to play a pivotal role
in parts procurement and to serve as logistics center for the whole Olympus
Group.
