| Disappearing Football Teams Of the more than 100 schools that dropped football in the 1950s and 1960s, few could afford to reinstate the sport at the major level. In 1960, Drake and Bradley were "Missouri Valley independents," playing a different schedule than the rest of the conference. Bradley soon joined the ranks of schools that dropped football to concentrate on less expensive sports. Some saved their programs by joining conferences that de-emphasized football. Bradley, however, is typical of today's Division I "basketball schools" that have neither the money to offer football scholarships, nor an interest in playing small college football. |
