A.T.& T. International Project PHOENIX

Main Duties

Employed for my skills in System Test, standards, procedures and methodologies, my initial task was to assist in correcting the existing system test procedures, and re-engineer the System Test environment into a more manageable approach.

Project Scope

Project PHOENIX is a front-end PC-LAN based system with IBM mainframe interfaces.

Produced initially from a software designer tool as a prototype system and reworked into a functional User Interface Client software system, the task of the testing team was to organise testing for the entire project.

Employed for my skills in System Test, standards, procedures and methodologies, my initial task was to assist in correcting the existing system test procedures, and re-engineer the System Test environment into a more manageable approach.

The Company

A.T.& T. International is a major American telecommunications company providing software solutions for Telecom Australia (now Telstra).

Configuration and Change Management activities

I proposed, designed and created software systems to encompass the necessary testing standards, procedures, and methodologies that would provide for:

The online data entry of Test Specifications, included business requirements traceability back to the business rules and functional requirements as specified by Telecom Australia.

The online scheduling of Test Cycles and Test Runs.

An online interface to execute scheduled Test Cycles (interfaced to MS Test automated regression software tool).

Capture and archive test results from executed Test Cycles.

Automated Status, statistical, and metrics reporting.

Automated link to Problem Management for reporting of test failures.

Analyst/Programmer activities

Created the following systems using MS Access:

Test Specification system for the online data entry of Test Specifications
Test Execution and Reporting system, linked to the Test Specification system and the MS Test regression test tool.

As a result of the completed software systems, the following advantages have now been realised for the project:

A project-wide common standard, format, and procedure for the testing environment

The standards, procedures, and methodology are built into a software system and cannot be circumvented.

Standardised reporting format.

An easily understood testing strategy and approach.

Accurate focus on testing activities

Changes to Test Specifications require minimal re-work and re-testing.

Cross-reference between MS Test test script programs and Test Cases and Test Conditions to provide sufficient functional and technical information

Provides business requirements traceability

Incomplete testing can be identified and corrected

Duplicated testing can be identified and removed if necessary

Automatic test results archive can provide management with statistical, metric, and status data to assess the testing progress.

Testing is seen as an integral part in delivering a quality product.
