| LOUGH LENE GAELS CAMOGIE CLUB HISTORY
Lough Lene Gaels Camogie club was founded at a meeting held in Collinstown Hall on Monday February 10th 1986. There was a good turnout at the meeting. In attendance at the meeting, includind P. J. Fulham amd Mairin Fulham, then the chairperson and secretary of the Westmeath Camogie Board respectively, Margaret Boland and the late Ann Smyth N.T.(R.I.P) were elected the first chairperson and secretary respectively of Lough Lene Gaels Camogie Club at the first meeting. The new club entered teams in the U/12 and U/14 grades in club competition in Westmeath in 1986. The first ever match played by a team representing Lough Lene Gaels Camogie Club was a Feile na nGael away to Tang in April 1986. Lough Lene Gaels were defeated by Tang in that match on a 4-0 to 0-0 scoreline. The club entered Junior, U/14 and U/12 teams in club camogie competitions in Westmeath in 1987. The U/12 team lost out in a play off to Raharney for a place in that year�s U/12 final. Further progress was made in 1988, the club qualifying for the final of that year�s Junior B final. But Delvin proved too good for Lough Lene Gaels in in the 1988 Junior B campgie championship final. In 1988 the U/14 squad contested the semi-final�s of both the Feile na nGael and Championship competition but defeat was to be their lot on both occasions. Lough Lene Gaels camogie club made a historic breakthrough in 1989 in a Feile na nGael Final. They defeated Tang on 4-1 to 0-0 scoreline, the U/14 squad also qualified for the U/14 A camogie in the same year, staging a great secondhalf comeback to draw with Drumraney, 2-4 to 3-1 having trailed by a margin of nine points at half time. In the replay three weeks later, The Gaels defeated Drumraney 3-0 to 0-0 to win the club it�s first ever championship title. In 1990 the club secured it�s first ever adult title when they defeated St. Mary�s (Streete) 2-3 to 0-0 in the Final of the Junior C Camogie Championship. The club aslo, unsuccessfully, contested the finals of the U/16 camogie championship and the Westmeath Feile na nGael competition also in 1990. In 1990 the club won a seven a side competition that was hosted by Caulry Camogie Club at their ground in Mount Temple. Lough Lene Gaels defeated Caulry in the Final. 1991 saw the club win both the U/14 A championhship and the Feile competition. All of 13 years were to lapse before the club again won both these competions(2004). The club also achieved another first in 1991 when they secured the U/16 Championship. The following year, 1992 was also very successful for the club, winning the Junior B, U/16 U/12 B titles. The years from 1993 to 1997 were quiet for the club in terms of honours. During the five years in question, the club contested a total of nine finals and won just three. The winning titles secured were; Junior A, (1994), U/12 A (1995), U/12 B (1996). As the end of the 90s approached the club looked forward to achieving further playing success. 1998 was a year in which the club achieved another first, namely winning a first Championship and the senior grade, namely the Senior B championship title. Lough Lene Gaels defeated Raharney by a margin of six points in that final. The club also won the U/16 championship in 1998. 1999 saw the club win Senior B and U/16 titles thus claiming back to back camogie championship successes in two grades of competitions. A three in a row sequence of Senior B titles was secured in 2000. the Gaels overcoming St. Munna�s 1-7 to 0-2 in the Final. The club also won the Minor Championship for the first time ever in 2000 defeating Delvin in the Final The year 2001 was a significant year for the club winning in that hyear it�s first, and up to and including 2008, it�s only Senior A championship title. In the 2001 Senior A Championship final they defeated St. Munna�s 1-10 to 0-10 in a great match, played in Clonkill, in front of a large gathering of enthusiastic spectators. The club unsuccessfully contested Senior A and Senior B Finals in 2002 before going on to win both the U./12 a and U/16 Championship Finals in 2003. The year 2004 market the 100th birthday of the National Camogie Association. In Centenary year the club won the U/14 A and Feile competions. The club also unsuccessfully contested the Senior A, U/16 and U/12 A championship finals in 2004 |
