| 1. | File name extensions are the period or dot (".") and 3-4 letters at the end of a file name. Even if the file name extension is hidden, the extension is always a part of the file name. |
| 2. | A file name extension is important to the computer because it tells the computer what type of file it is and which application should be used to open it. |
| 3. | To show or hide file name extensions on the computer, follow these steps: Open any folder, go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options, click on the View tab and then remove the checkmark next to "Hide file extensions for known file types." |
| 4. | If a file name extension is changed or removed, the computer may no longer be able to open that file. |
