Turning the Computer On & Off

When turning a computer OFF, turn it off in this order:

1.  Left-click on the Start Menu Button to open the Start Menu.

Start Menu (Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition)

Start Menu (Microsoft Windows XP)

2. In older versions of windows, move the mouse pointer over the words "Shut Down" until that line is highlighted (see first picture above). In Windows XP, move the mouse pointer over the words "Turn off Computer" (see second picture above) on the bottom right side of the Start Menu.

3. Left-click once on the highlighted line that says "Shut Down" or over the words "Turn off Computer," depending on which version of Microsoft Windows your computer has.

4. For older versions of Windows:

If the dialog box already says "Shut Down" in the text box, click on the "OK" button.

If the dialog box has something other than "Shut Down" in the text box, left-click over the downward pointing arrow to the right of the words shown. This will open the list and give you more options.

Select "Shut Down" from the list by left-clicking on it, make sure that it says "Shut Down" in the text box, and then click on the "OK" button.

For Windows XP:

Left-click once on "Turn Off."

6. Turn off any attached devices such as speakers, printer, etc.

7. Turn off the monitor.

8. Do not turn off the hard disk drive - the computer will shut it off for you in most cases.

9. Turn off the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), if there is one.

10. Turn off the extension cord or surge protector, if there is one.

11. Turn off the wall outlet.
