Deleting Files & Folders/Using the Recycle Bin

Answers

  1.  The Recycle Bin is a special folder, located on the Desktop, that holds files and folders until they are ready to be removed from the computer permanently (erased).

  2.  To open the Recycle Bin, either double-click on the Recycle Bin icon or right-click on the icon and select Open from the shortcut menu.

  3.  To close the Recycle Bin, click on the Close ("X") button in the upper right-hand corner of the window, or open the File menu and select Close.

  4.  One Recycle Bin icon shows an empty waste bin/wastebasket. This icon means there are no files or folders in the Recycle Bin at that time. The second icon shows a waste bin/wastebasket with trash in it, meaning there is at least one file or folder in the Recycle Bin at that time.

  5.  Files and folders are placed in the Recycle Bin before being permanently deleted so that you can change your mind about deleting them if you want to.

  6.  There are two ways to move files and folders to the Recycle Bin. The first way is to right-click on the file or folder icon and select Delete from the shortcut menu. The second way is to drag-and-drop the file or folder into the Recycle Bin.

  7.  Clicking on the Restore All button in older versions of Windows or on the "Restore all items" line under "Recycle Bin Tasks" in Windows XP will place all of the files and folders currently in the Recycle Bin back in their original locations. For example, if a file or folder was moved from the My Documents folder into the Recycle Bin, it would be returned to that folder when it was restored.

  8.  Clicking on the Empty Recycle Bin button in older versions of Windows or on the "Empty the Recycle Bin" line under "Recycle Bin Tasks" in Windows XP will completely and permanently erase from the computer all of the files and folders that were in the Recycle Bin at that time.

  9.  If you want to put only one file or folder back where it was before you moved it to the Recycle Bin, left-click on that file or folder's icon. In older versions of Windows, the Restore All button will change to say Restore. Click on the Restore button to return the file or folder to its original location. In Windows XP, click on the "Restore this item" line under "Recycle Bin Tasks."

10.  Restored files and folders are returned to the locations where they were before they were placed in the Recycle Bin. This location can be seen in the Recycle Bin window when the file or folder icon is left-clicked.

11.  The first way to empty the Recycle Bin is to open it and then left-click the Empty Recycle Bin button in older versions of Windows or on the "Empty the Recycle Bin" line under "Recycle Bin Tasks" in Windows XP. The second way to empty it is to right-click over the Recycle Bin icon and select Empty Recycle Bin from the shortcut menu.

12.  When you empty the Recycle Bin, a dialog box appears asking if you really want to delete the files and folders. If you accidentally click on the Empty Recycle Bin button instead of the Restore All button, click on the No button in the dialog box to cancel the permanent deletion.
