The Cloud Isle of Kaldun
The Cloud Isle of Kaldun floats majestically atop a great white cloud 500' above the Sea of Fallen Stars, about 100 miles east-southeast of Westgate. The city is approximately a mile and a half on each side, surrounded by magically erected tree-covered mountains hundreds of feet high that protect the isle from high winds.
The Cloud Isle was originally half a mile on a side, but soon after Lord Rowanmantle's disappearance, more cloud collected and solidified, and the significant flora expanded to cover it almost immediately, certainly as a result of some mighty magic.
The Citadel of the Lion rests in the northern portion of the cloud, surrounded by a deep moat well-stocked with fish, both predator and prey. This was Lord Rowanmantle's seat of power until his disappearance, and the center of power wielded by the Steward of the City, Lady Velanna, the Phoenix of Lathander, in the name of Cormyr, King Azoun, and Lord Rowanmantle.
To the east and southeast of the Citadel lie the Skydock, shrines, warehouses, and the Great Square, the focal point of the city's economy.
The Skydock is built around a large hole in the cloud, through which a mighty magical construct of Lord Rowanmantle's creation lifts entire ships from the ocean below to the city.
In the center of the Great Square is a unending geyser who's waters flow into large streams running in the cardinal directions. In the west the streams meander a great deal, and seem quite natural, even to the point of sustaining a thriving fish and other animal populations (no large predators live on the cloud, however, other than Lord Rowanmantle's charges). To the west and southwest is farmland, the fertility of which is greatly enhanced by the Druid Alyysssa who maintains a grove along the western wall of the cloud.
Near the center of the cloud are two grand and beautiful towers, the Temple of the Sun, dedicated to Lathander Morninglord, and the Temple of the Moon, dedicated to Selune. The clergy of the two towers are competitive but friendly. Lady Velanna is the High Priestess of Lathander in the city as well as Steward in Rowanmantle's absence, and at least nominally, most city dwellers are faithful of Lathander. Near the Great Square can be found several shrines, one to the Triumvirate of Tyr, Torm, and Ilmater. Most other popular faiths have small shrines in this area. In the western woodlands is a grove to Silvanus, and in a quiet, secluded meadow in the northeast corner a small shrine to Eldath.
The citizens of Kaldun live in the town in the southern and southeastern end of the cloud, arranged into seven neat blocks. There are blacksmiths, haberdashers, potters, tailors, etc, and several inns and taverns, the best being the Dragongate, which supposedly operates at a loss to ensure a happy, continuous, bursting clientele. In short, all the necessary elements of a thriving town.
Over 6,000 people live in Kaldun, and almost 10% of them train in the militia for general defense, although it almost unimaginable that anyone could transport an army of any size 500' up to the cloud.
