As well as its standard clone troopers, the Army of the Republic employed a number of specially trained units to form elite fighting groups. The clone captains were one such unit.

Clone captains - or clone commandos as they were also known - were designated by the red markings on their helmets and torso armour. These officers had a wide range of mission profiles; as well as leading a company of one hundred and forty four clone troopers, they were assigned daring commando missions - which explained their clone commando moniker.

Commandos were trained to handle the Aratech military speeder bikes, and often used them during a conflict. In the Battle of Geonosis, clone commandos flew into battle on their speeder bikes, flying rings around the lumbering Confederate spider droids. They were able to down several enemy units by throwing pulse grenades onto the droids as they raced by. Such was the success of the commando units, the elite ARC troopers were also assigned red-marked captains to their ranks.
