2020 Vision - The Road to Sustainability
About This Page

This page offers a few of my personal ambitions to achieve a more sustainable lifestyle over the next 20 years.

I know its a long time, but these things take time planning and financing and at times external conditions may not be  right to allow things to proceed at pace.

Some new ideas will be embraced by the early adopters of technology, whilst others may  achieve success only when there is a fashion or following behind them. Market forces will surely dictate when the technology becomes commonplace - such that every home will have one.

My interests lie in the application of renewable energy and appropriate new technology to achieve a sustainable low impact lifestyle, without adversely affecting the quality of life but ultimately improving it manifold.

Appropriate new technologies will have an impact on several key areas, some of which are lsited below

Communications
Housing
Employment
Transport
Energy
Diet
Leisure

Consider transport and energy, these are two areas where we must make progressive changes in order to achieve sustainability.

If you ask a householder about his domestic bills and the type of car he drives, a typical answer in 2003 is likely to be:

"My house is heated by gas central heating and we spend about 600 per year on the fuel bills. As for the car, I drive 12000 miles a year in a diesel Mondeo which gets 48 miles to the gallon"

In 15 years or so the answer could be somewhat different:

"My house uses a combination of passive solar heating and the rest comes from the multi-fuel combined heat and power plant in the garage. That runs on just about anything and charges up the electric hybrid at night, helping to reduce the amount of biodiesel we use. In the summer months, all our hot water and electricity comes from the solar collectors and pV panels on the garage roof.
