2004/05 Intake

Welcome to all those who have just joined us

What is jiu jitsu?
Jiu jitsu is an ancient martial art that teaches strikes, throws, locks, nerve point attacks, weapons techniques and general all round self defence.

When do we train?
We train mondays and wednesdays from 7-9 and saturdays from 11-1

Do I need to be fit?

Not at all! It doesnt matter if you are a superfit marathon runner, or a curry lover like me, the techniques are based on skill and practice not strength or fitness.  We don't do hundreds of sit-ups and push-ups but it is a physical activity and hopefully as a result of training you will gain an increase in your general fitness, but it is certainly not essential, the important thing is everyone works at their own pace.

Does it matter if I have done another martial art before?
Having done a previous martial art may be neither a hinderance nor an advantage. It simply means you are aware that there are many techniques to learn. Many judo practitioners find that although they have studied the throws we do, they are often done in another way and find it difficult to adapt initially to a new style. Likewise many Aikido practitioners have practised similar locks to us, but we often work our way into them in a completely different manner, and again find it difficult to make the transition. Karate practitioners find themselves using the same attacks as we do. However, where the karate ka is expected to strike, they may find it strange to move in for a throw. I believe that you are at no advantage/disadvantage having done a previous martial art. It wont really make a difference.

How much will it cost me?
As most of us are either students, or ex-students, we are aware that finances are tight, and so we try to keep costs as low as possible. This is often easier as we are a non-profit making organistation. There is the inevitable joining fee, which has been reduced from 20 to 15 this year. Session fees are charged at 1.50, although your first 2 sessions are free of charge. Gradings are 10.50 which covers the grading panels costs and your mat fees. National events are the biggest expense, but they are worth it. There is no pressure at all to go on these but I am sure that once you give them a go you will certainly be coming back for more! It costs between 15 and 25 for national events but that doesnt cover accommodation costs. However, if there are enough people going it is permissable to share hotel rooms with 3 or 4 others to reduce costs.

What do I need?
Any comfortable clothing (not your best clothing) such as a rugby shirt and tracksuit bottoms would be ideal.  Feel free to wear a gi if you already have one but it is not vital to have one in order to join.
