Leaders Roma suffered their third league defeat of the season on striker Gabriel Batistuta's first return to the club he left in June. With nine matches to go, Roma lead Juventus, their main rivals for the title, by six points. Italy striker Enrico Chiesa scored two of Fiorentina's goals while the third was an own goal by French defender Vincent Candela. Brazilian Emerson had levelled the match at 1-1 with a 30th minute header.

Bologna came from behind twice to record their 10th win of the season. Perugia's Giovanni Tedesco put the visitors in the lead with a fine chip in the sixth minute but Tomas Locatelli equalised a minute later with a strike from just outside the box. Tedesco bagged his second with an 18th minute header but youngster Giacomo Cipriani equalised on the stroke of halftime with a brilliant overhead kick inside the box. Ex-Perugia midfielder Renato Olive gave Bologna the win, knocking home a rebound in the 77th minute.

Brescia earned their fifth league win of the season by thrashing Reggina in a relegation clash. Roberto Baggio converted a penalty and set up two other goals to help Brescia climb to 25 points, one above Napoli, Verona, and Vicenza. Reggina remain second from bottom with 20 points.

Inter's mini-revival ended with a poor performance against improving Vicenza. Sierra Leone striker Mohammed Kallon, on a one-season loan from Inter, put Vicenza ahead in the 30th minute with a close-range effort. Uruguayan midfielder Alvaro Recoba salvaged a point for Inter with a deflected free kick in the last minute.

In-form Atalanta grabbed their sixth road win of the season. Nicola Ventola put the visitors in the lead with his seventh goal of the season in the 69th minute. Midfielder Domenico Morfeo made sure of the victory by adding a breakaway goal 10 minutes from time. Atalanta climb to fifth, level on 40 points with Parma who have a game in hand.

Ten-man Napoli held AC Milan to a goalless draw in front of 40,000 at the San Paolo stadium. AC Milan had several opportunities to take the lead but Napoli goalkeeper Alberto Fontana made some critical saves on Jose Mari and Francesco Coco. Defender Salvatore Fresi was sent off three minutes before halftime for a last-man foul on Milan forward Andriy Shevchenko but Napoli held on for their ninth league draw of the season.

Udinese notched their 10th victory of the season and first under new manager Luciano Spalletti by beating bottom club Bari. Italy international Stefano Fiore put the home side in front after 50 seconds of play slotting home a cross from Martin Jorgensen. Striker Roberto Muzzi, making his return from injury after a three month absence, secured the win when he scored well into injury time for his fifth goal of the season.

Alessandro Del Piero converted a 45th minute penalty to give Juventus their seventh away win and 15th league victory of the season. Juventus remain second, six points behind top-of-the-table AS Roma who play at Fiorentina on Monday. Verona were left with 10 men after defender Luigi Apolloni was sent off in the 68th minute.
