Verona 0 - 1 Juventus
Del Piero 45' (penalty)
Sunday 8 Apr 2001
Juve brings home three important points, from Verona, the same team that cost the Bianconeri so dear last season. The decisive moment was that of the one goal, scored by Del Piero on a penalty kick, which won the match for Juve. Following the goal very little happened. The climate was tense and it remained thus till the very end of the match. Juve were lined up aggressively with Del Piero, Inzaghi and Trezeguet all on the pitch and the team had no problem imposing their pace.
First half
The first chance for the Bianconeri came on the tenth minute with a not particularly dangerous penalty taken by Del Piero, which Ferron's had no problem mastering. Verona answered with a shot by Salvetti which was blocked easily by Van der Sar. On the 15th minute Del Piero put the home team's keeper into difficulty with a powerful shot at goal, but Scaligero managed to defend well. Juve did not give up and used everything at their disposal including breakaway balls and long crosses to reach the goal, but it was not an easy feat for the Bianconeri. The only danger for Ferron came from a header by Trezeguet on the 28th minute from a penalty by Tudor.
Verona's keeper once again managed to keep the ball from finishing in the net. The game was stopped on the 48th minute, when Inzaghi was brought down in the area. Appolloni's foul gave Juve the shot from the spot on which Del Piero scored the first and only goal of the game (0-1).
Second half
The Bianconeri returned to the pitch with the same grit of the first half, and Inzaghi who received ball from Pessotto shot at goal almost immediately but without any success. Eight minutes later, on the 13th minute Bonazzoli set Van der Sar into action with a shot at goal. Juventus defended their half of the field well and Del Piero who was playing further back than usual because of the absence of Zidane, gave a hand in winning stray balls.
On the 15th minute Tacchinardi delivered a splendid pass to Trezeguet who came close to scoring the second goal, but the keeper blocked his shot. Following this, the French striker was substituted by Conte and Apolloni was sent off after receiving his second warning - leaving Verona in ten. On the 24th minute Inzaghi attempted to header into goal, but Verona's was ready and stopped the ball.
Pippo Inzaghi left the pitch on the 38th minute for Kovacevic, who immediately started an assault on Verona's that finished with Ferron blocking Zambrotta's shot. Nothing much else happened and Juve went on to collect three important points.
