"The
Limp Mystery
"
14/12/72 - No.42 to 28/10/72 - No.44
Steve has to act
quickly when one of the horses, 'Diamond', belonging to four children goes
lame crossing a railway crossing. The girl's father, Forshaw, arrives at
Follyfoot to thank Steve but can no longer look after the horse which he
bought in a sale. Dora decides to take the horse in but the mystery
deepens when it seems 'Diamond' is faking the limp...

"The Prince"

Follyfoot has an
untamed stallion called 'Thunderclap', and Steve and Dora have a new job
giving riding lessons to the boys at Swinford Public School. But Prince
Ahmed, heir to the Arabian state of Kufrastan, who is boarded there is
under threat from his regent uncle Sheik Ismail, who does not want the boy
to reach his 18th birthday. Dora and Steve see Ahmed flee the school, and
offer Follyfoot as a hiding place...

trouble between Stryker and Maxie, leader of a local biker gang, in his

Unscrupulous
Mark Blunden and his son Eric turn up with old ex-cavalry horse called
'Gladiator', who they want back in reasonable trim. He has a scheme to
sell Australian millionaire Barney Garforth an old ruined manor house by
making it seem like the local legend of the ghost horseman is true...

Polo player
Anthony Darthington rides hard and plays rough, with his steed 'Nero'
smashing into a post and breaking its leg. He orders the horse destroyed
but his sister Patricia secretly uses their joint bank account to stable
'Nero' at Follyfoot to heal...

Lord Burcott
looks after retired horses at his hall but cash is always a problem.
Hosting a gymkhana to raise funds, the event goes badly without other
attractions for children. But Smythe, owner of donkey for beach rides,
also needs a new home because of a new motorway flyover...

"Jamie"

Steve and
Dora are nearly driven off the road by Jonathan Scrimger, a local
councillor and man of money with a deep-rooted hate of horses since his
son Jamie was thrown by one and crippled. Jamie causes three bikers to be
fined because of a fire they start, and in revenge they set fire to the
magistrates land - trapping Jamie in his broken down invalid carriage...

'Bonaparte',
an ex-police horse, becomes self-appointed and jealous protector of a
valuable racehorse colt called 'Lancer'. 'Bonaparte' is suspicious of
Slugger, hounding him from Follyfoot. and he boards up at the Colonel's
mansion. But he is attacked that night by men are trying to steal
'Lancer'...

Ron takes
his motorbike over the moors, and is warned to away from Long Scranton
Ranges, where the army are due to test a top secret weapon. But in the
wilderness of Rotten Fell he comes across two men with binoculars and
telescopic camera who he believes are spies...

Mister
Jenkins brings 'Ebeneezer', one of the biggest, most stubborn mules for a
fortnight's board at Follyfoot while on holiday. Dora and Steve take
riders on a week's horseback camping, among them the arrogant Nigel
Mulliner, challenges their experience. Steve wakes to find Nigel gone for
a night ride, and lost in mist, the boy falls over a ravine...

On the death
of his master, 'Paddy' - an old carthorse - comes to Follyfoot. But
listless and forlorn, it seems he is pining and refuses to take an
interest in anything. Meanwhile, old Mr Jackson, owner of a one-man bus
service running between outlying farms, has been told to close down by the
council, and is threatened with contempt of court for vandalism...

When new
regulations mean the horse stalls at Follyfoot have to be broadened, Dora
and Steve fall out when he invites an old friend, Kevin Bately, to assist,
as he is her close rival in the showjumping competition...

Police patrolling the Dales above Follyfoot for horse-hide hunters arrest
well-known and innocent poacher Amos Culworth instead. Dora is driven to
act and rescues Amos, bringing him to Follyfoot to hide...

"The Forgers"
05/01/74 - No.2 to 09/03/74 - No.9
When Steve
helps the Runleigh Railway Preservation Society clear a rockfall from a
disused line they have restored, he discovers a new pound note that leads
him to think it was no accident. Ambushed by armed men, he is then
arrested when he uses the note to try and call for help from a cafe, as it
is a forgery...
(Note: this story segues into the next, with Steve being
offered the circus job in the last part).

Circus"

Steve has
been offered a job as stunt rider at Mason's circus but learns his
predecessor left under mysterious circumstances. Mr Gorescu, using his man
Dino working at the circus, is trying to stop it from opening, and after
Mason is shot and wounded, Steve and Ron go on the trail to catch those
responsible...

"A Horse Called Steve"

With Steve
gone, Follyfoot is not the same. Even with 'Sherry' in foal, Dora seems to
have lost all interest in Follyfoot, and carelessly causes a fire in the
stables, which Slugger puts out. All Dora can do is blame herself but
amidst the fire, 'Sherry' has foaled, and Slugger suggests calling the
foal 'Smokey'. But Ron has a better idea - call him 'Steve', to keep the
name alive at Follyfoot until he returns.
