When the Rebel Alliance chose the fourth planet in the Yavin system after they were forced to abandon it base on Dantooine they had no idea that the planet had served as a pivotal battleground a millennia ago and would do so again.
This lush moon circles the gas giant Yavin. Yavin 4 is covered with steamy jungles broken by sluggish rivers and volcanic mountain ranges. Everywhere teams with life on this moon. Whisper birds soar above brown waters avoiding the spider anglers on the hunt for small fish mucous salamanders. while chattering woolamanders swing through the leafy canopy while Yavinian runyips root through the tangled undergrowth. A swarm of piranha-beetles can strip a bristly stintaril to the bone in mere seconds.
It was nearly 5,000 years in the past that Dark Lord Naga Sadow went to ground here and interred a huge starship after he escaped the fall of the Sith Empire. Sadow's warrior bodyguards the Massassi remained as guardians of his legacy. Over time the Massassi devolved into a primitive and dangerous people. A thousand years later the fallen Jedi Exar Kun made the moon his base of operations. He created new temples as focal points for the dark side energy. During the climatic battle in the Sith War a united Jedi force laid waste to the on while Exar Kun released his spirit from his body. In the conflagration all the Massassi warriors were killed.
The jungles reclaimed the moon and it was nearly four millennia before they were disturbed again. The Rebel alliance decided that the temples would make great hangers and support centers for their new base.
It was not long after the moon was taken over by the Rebel Alliance the empire's new weapon the Death Star threatened to destroy the planet. The Death Star approached the planet from around the gas giant Yavin. Once it cleared the plane it would have a clean shot at the moon.
The Rebels had one shot at destroying the Death Star. A small band of X-Wing and Y-Wing fighters managed to penetrate the battle stations defenses. Luke Skywalker sent torpedoes down the exhaust vent of the main reactor causing the station to exploded. The Rebels evacuated the moon soon afterward. Luke would return to Yavin 4 years later to start the new Jedi Academy.
During the first year the spirit of Exar Kun returned and nearly killed Luke. Later, Admiral Daala plummeted the moon with the Super Star Destroyer Knight Hammer. Though all this Luke and his Jedi trainees bravely used their powers to defy and defeat evil.
