Ranger had only 2 goals:  hit the moon and photograph it on the way down.  Three years and 7 tries later, Ranger 7 finally did both objectives.  Now all that is left of the rangers on the moon is the craters they made on impact.  Worthy of a future visit, I think.
Ranger 3, 4, and 5 can be identified by the balsa wood sphere on its top.  The ball housed a seismometer and would have recorded moonquakes.
Rangers 6, 7, 8, 9 all had the same simplified design.  Science instruments on previous Rangers were removed to focus on the primary goal.
Surveyor's goal was to soft land on the moon.  The Russians beat Surveyor to the moon by 4 months.  The surveyors returned pictures and scraped the soil with a mechanical scoop.  Note undeployed landing gear near picture of Apollo 12 astronaut.  He is Charles Conrad and is standing on the moon next to Surveyor 3.
