Bad experience with Emirates airlines? You are not alone!

After publication of my article I got lot of letters where people shared with me the similar bad experiences they had with Emirates airlines. Following are some of these similar experiences. To be fair,  I am also including messages which support Emirates service.

Emirates Airlines is buying first spot on most Search Engines, and by doing so dislodging this page from its premium position, so if you would like to keep this page "known" on Internet, make a link to this page and tell your friends about this page. Thanks!

First of all for Patti Cooper.. this site is not about foreign passports.. or identity crisis.. its about people.. no matter where they are from.. paying money for a flight and getting nothing in return.

Now personally, I am a foreign student in the US and have flown emirates everytime except once. Bothways. and almost everytime, I've had misconnections in dubai.. but unlike the rest of these people here, I was promptly given a Hotel, three meal vouchers and unlike you Mr. Jawad, the hotels were pretty decent everytime. and i am talking about 5-6  occasions here.. Once my flight from lahore was delayed for 4 hours coz of a storm which made me miss all my connections. At the dubai airport, I was told that they couldnt book me until the next afternoon, which meant staying there for more than 24 hrs. But at my request that i had to be in the US within the next 24 hours, I was told that they'd try and later i got a call at my hotel that they had accomodated me.

But yes, I've had a pretty bad experience too. This one time before my Dubai-London flight, I had to face quite a lot of shit by this Emirates Personnel before boarding. They have this law in UAE i think that they check your passport at the gate to see if u have the visa for your destination country or not. so there, this indian guy looked at my passport and visa, plus the various entry and exit stamps and 2 transit UK visas. Then he turned back to the first page and started scrutinizing the passport very closely. and then the visa again. then he asks me if i am student. and i was like yes.. so he demands to see my Pakistani national ID card.. and i was like why would i carry it on me when i am traveling OUT of pakistan? so he demands my student ID.. and after seeing that, he tells me to show him my I20. by this time, i was loosing my patience but decided to stay shut coz i knew it wasnt going to be any use. then he tells me to stand aside and that he'd deal with me later. now that was the limit so i asked him to let me speak to the customer service people and that i wanted to know that why was i being held back. so the guy flares up in rage and asks me in these exact word: " wat do u think i am? u think i am an aaaaasshole (yup! he said that)??? u think we are standing here to do bullshit??" and well quite a lot of some unpleasant stuff. then he tells me that i would be deported to Lahore and that they'd blacklist me on emirates and god knows wat other threats for something i had no idea of. so i was made to miss the flite to London Gatwick, despite my protest and the threats of deportation continued everytime i spoke. My luggage as it turned out, had already been loaded on the flight and sent to London. I wasnt allowed to leave the gate and had 2 arab guards to make sure i didnt go anywhere. I was unable to figure out, and still am, that wat did i do wrong. After the flight had left, a pakistani guy, who had been watching all this quietly, talked to the indian guy at my request and then i was herded away with 5-6 other people who had been stopped with me. Iranians and srilankans. Then another arab guy came and took me aside and told me that the rest of them would be deported and that they'd put me on the next flight to Heathrow. I asked him that why was i stopped in the first place and i was simply told that the indian guy had found my passport and visa to be fake and their specialists had examined them and found them OK. so it was just a HUMAN ERROR!!! like i was told, they did put me on the next flite to Heathrow and from their to Newark, NJ. but all my luggage was lost and i got it a month later by FedEx with my suitcases broken open by US customs. Nothing was missing but the taped suitcases we useless for me. That wouldnt have happened if my luggage hadnt gone on the wrong flite or if i had been allowed to go on my actual flight.

Hi I'm Paul,
I a just recently returned from Cyprus & I just want to say
that you have got it all wrong mate. Maybe why they were rude to you is
because you were rude & disrespectful to the cabin crew. As I was
reading through your collection of letters that you've recived & as one
guy said you get 18 movie channels 16 games channels 40 audio channels,
now that is quality & service for you. Mate maybe you,ve expirenced
some rough situations but I'm telling you maybe you should fly with
them again, but just a short flight with not that much valubles in your
luggage.

i'm writing to you to tell you what i think of your web site, obviously you
have got nothing else to than this !!! Don't you work or do something good
in your life??? of course not if you are doing this;anyway as you gave some
tips on how to become perfect 007 when we fly let me tell you this:

I travel a lot even to Pakistan and India and since i do, i've noticed that
most of you are ashamed of their roots, an english passport or american
gives you the right to behave as the ruler of the world, you believe that
passport is the right to be treated exactly like an american or an english
,but my friend let me tell you that it is not like this your future will
always show your asian roots it is something you have to accept
unfortunately.Don't get upset if somebody talks to you in urdu ,maybe they
are just trying to be nice and don't be so proud of a passport that is not
from your country!!! You are just immigrants as any other nationality. Do
you get it???

Another thing is about the hotel you are talking in your complaint it was
dirty and the food was horrible.Right? How posh you are my dear Jawad, maybe
in USA you have only seen beautyfull hotels clean ,tidy and lovely food ???
Well, let me rimind you of your country maybe you don't remember that there
is people that don't know what is a toilette and they simply do wathever
they need to do on the streets. Maybe you don't know that rats are
everywhere in Pakistan,or that people don't even dare to complaint about
their food becouse they don't have it???
I feel truly sorry for this people that have nothing, but they are nice
,friendly and happy .

Obviously that passport you have made you forget of all this, but maybe this
is what is all about when you don't have anything to think about you become
ridiculous and stupid !!!!!

Somebody said once :give civilization to beasts they will always remain
beasts Good luck  i think you need it .... (foul language edited)

Subject: Theft of goods from a baggage in a world class airline

Hi,

My name is Mrs Jyothsna Joseph and my e-mail address is
[email protected]. It was a relief to see this page. The world is
gaga about this airline but I had a very bitter experience. I put
jewellery worth $10000 in the checked in baggage, I have done that in
the past eight years of international travel. My baggage(Delsey) cover
is gone and three locks opened carefully by a sharp object, the marks
are visible and the jewellery is gone. Now my question is how can a
world class airline just leave my luggage(I am business class passenger)
for somebody to so freely tamper with it. I am not claiming the money
from the airline, all I am asking is catch the culprit who did this
which I think is their responsibility and my right, things will take
their course and I will get back my goods. They say they are not liable
for any lost jewellery, agreed, but how my box got opened, anything I
put in my box is valuable to me. This is a blantant abuse of the X-ray
machines. I don't know how to proceed. Kindly advise.

Hi Jawad,

I have recently gone through agony whilst on my journey from Kuwait  - Dubai - Mumbai and back on Emirates airlines.

I am enclosing the complaint letters I have sent to the Emirates Office, which bear the facts and details. Emirates, truely, isnt what it claims to be.

Unfortunately, we dont have any consumer courts in  middle east that we can sue the airlines or something. But, I guess, you can carry the struggle and see to it that the airlines changes its attitude towards the passengers and does not discriminate.

Dear sir,

I have read your articles and didn't seem to agree at first until i had a bad experience with their flight from Dubai to Maldives in Business class, and even after making a formal complaint the customer service were basically protective about their cabin crew, and also noticed that they basically cover each other up.
I had a letter written by Susan Quinn of customer service, please advice if you have details of any other senior managers.

Don't swallow too quickly when terms like "best Middle East carrier," "#1
Business Class," etc. is shoved down your throat. Try asking yourself who
bestowed such honors in the first place. You'll find that these types of
awards are "bought & paid for" honestly! It's just as true that to find out
the real story on a product you check sources that are not sponsored by
advertisers (i.e. Consumer's Reports). I live in Dubai and run into
employees every day... not necessarily a very impressive lot. I concur with
one of your respondents... "Customer Service" is not even a concept for most
people here.

You mentioned PIA... it is definitely not a high profile airlines and
doesn't offer all the goodies of Emirates or BA or Air France... but the
service is quite good. Sometimes, all you need is someone who is pleasing
and responsive to attend you and some peace and quiet on the flight.

Dear Jawad,

I am Rustam Khan from Canada. I have travelled throughout the world on almost
all major airlines of the world including American Airlines, Air Canada,
British Airlines, PIA, Saudi Airlines, Air India, Lufthansa, Swiss Air,
Emirates and many others.

My experience had been extremely good with Emirates due to which I always
recommended to my colleagues, friends and relatives to pick Emirates for
travels. Being a frequent flyer, I choose Emirate Connections whereever
available due to their the best services, attitude of staff, comfort,
personal touch, excellent facilities and one can add on to this list of their
distinctions.

Emirates being a very new airlines has infact excelled its cotemporary
airlines and wish that others could learn from the magnificent glories and
achievements of Emirates Air Lines.

I must tell you whatever u mentioned in yr experience is one of the odd case. I personnely had a very good experience with Emirates, and I believe they are the best out of the bunch. It seems lilke you also a frequent flyer , I wd like to tell u , u cannot come to a conclution just beacause of your one experience. From my view basically you are looking for  some good compansation so that u don't have to pay for your next trip.[I know it is very common with people living in USA].

Pitty on you man, u wasting your time why don't you use this time to do something creative or something good for your country

I have flown on Emirates from Baltimore, MD, US to Dubai. I have relatives in Dubai and fly on Emirates because it is faster to book a Dubai ticket through them. However, i have noticed a phenominal variation in Customer Service (a term that corporations in the UAE are unaware of) between the ground crew in LHR and DXB. While the British staff of Emirates are kind and couteous, the Indian, Pakistani and Emarati staff at Dubai Airport are ride, ignorant and illeterate. I have worked in the Aviation industry and am well aware of the standards that airlines like UA and Singapore thrive to meet. In the case of Emirates, there is only one goal, please the ethnic-Europeans with dignity and the rest can find their own way. In fact, it doesn't matter to them if you are an American or Canadian with ethnic-South Asian heritage; as long as you are not fair skinned, you are not going very far with the EK and Dubai Airport staff.
My last journey to The City of Gold (Yeah RIGHT!)  was kind of pleasant. After travelling several times on the BWI-DXB route, i had decided that i had to put my foot down. After reaching Dubai airport, i discovered that a never ending queue lay ahead, at the Immigration check. After waiting in line for 45 minutes and seeing a number of passengers jump the queue, i walked up to the Immigration Officer and asked him why everyone was being delayed. My question was polite and in English, but the reply that followed was rude, almost breathed out in flames, and not surprisingly, in Urdu. I told the Immigration Officer (on purpose) that i would appreciate it if he would be kind enough to reply in English and he told me (in Urdu) to go to the back of the line and wait for my turn. I then informed the Officer that he was being inconsiderate and that he should learn to speak with more respect with foreign tourists. When my turn was up, i produced my passport (American) and could not help but giggle at the surprised expression on his face. Maybe he assumed that just because i looked Asian, i was Asian.

Truly sorry to hear about your appalling story. Next to you my complaints are trivial.

I must be one of a rare breed ie. a European who has nothing but bad experiences with Emirates. Plus service notably declines as you get nearer to the hub. Check-in at Manchester UK feels like VIP (and no mistake) but by Dubai you're just another lump of meat.

My problems with Emirates are simple - their ridiculous attitude to night-flights. 2am, 3am, it's all the same - breakfast shoved in your face straight after take-off, even on flights with 8 or 9am arrival. What other airline does that? Noise noise noise. No dimming for 45 mins plus.

Then just when you finally nod off - they wake you up with some pompous marketing video about the Glories of Dubai.

My last flight produced near mutiny from desperate passengers just wanting to sleep. Plus the IFE malfunctioned (as usual) but this time playing mad tempo Arabian piped music FOR SIX HOURS SOLID over the cabin speakers. (Same tune - imagine that!) People had to walk to the back of the plane and demand ear plugs. Cabin crew did nothing to help.

Emirates in summary :

Clean modern planes
Pompous self regard
Food average
BUT THE NOISIEST MOST IRRITATING CABIN ENVIRONMENT of any airline I've ever used.

Fear going mad at hearing Emirates jingle again, so won't go. At least BA create a bit of hush and leave you alone.

Best wishes sir

Wow, what a shitty experience!!

I was on Emirates two years ago, Singapore-Dubai-Singapore and
thoroughly enjoyed it. Much better than my country's Singapore Airlines.

In June, my family and I are taking Emirates again,
Singapore-Frankfurt-Singapore. Besides the 3 hours stopover at Dubai, I
don't expect any unpleasantness. However, if I have to go through what
you had experience, be sure that I will tell the world about it at your
webpage.

Dear Mr. Jawad,

I reached this site by mistake. I was surprised to find so many bad comments about Emirates in a single place.
I managed to jump from sadness to consternation. I find amazing how people can blame an airline for so many reasons most of them hilarious... Blaming Emirates Airline for the racial discrimination anywhere in the world, for missing luggage or for the immigration laws in Dubai is really stupid. I understand the people's fury but there are things that this company can't control. If I'll tell you that sometimes even the crew stays for 24 hours on outstations without luggage won't make anybody happy. But this things happen no matter of airline.
The people who decided to fly with another airline reading this site don't know what they are missing. And I'm talking about a safe journey (check the "excellent" english Singapore Airline's pilots have and think what english language mean for cockpit communications), excellent food, great entertainment system and  the most professional cabin crew.
I decided to sent the Internet address to the management of the Emirates Airline because I felt that those people deserve an answer. I hope that this will repair some of the inconveniences people suffered. But for most of the people participating with messages on this site I have bad news: Emirates can't decide the movement of the moon and sun on the sky...
Best regards,

Cristian

2 April, 2001

United Arab Emirates,

Customer Services,

Complaints Department

Dear Sir or Madam:

I wish to make a claim against your company, for the horrendous journey my wife and I encountered on our way back from three weeks holiday in Thailand.

This terrible event started when we arrived to check in at Bangkok Airport at 10pm local time on Friday August 11th. We were supposed to be flying to Dubai at 0115am Saturday 12th local time on flight EK87 and then on a connection with The Emirates to Manchester EK35 arriving back in Manchester on Saturday 12th at 1225pm.

On arrival at check in a check in supervisor gave us a sheet of paper to explain that there was a flight delay of 10 hours and that there would be refreshments served for our delay. The paper also explained where to obtain the voucher for refreshments.

We were then left in Bangkok airport all night with a refreshment voucher worth about 300 baht, £5 in my currency for the two of us. There was no mention of any accommodation for the night because we would not be flying until 11am Saturday 12th when the problem of no flight was not our fault.

We both sat around the airport all night , my wife is 66 and I am 51. We had left our hotel at 12 noon on Friday August 11th. It was going to be 23 hours from leaving our hotel before we were even boarding our first leg of our flight home. We were both completely shattered when checking in for our 11am Saturday 12th flight to Dubai, we both felt physically ill.

At check in we were told obviously we would have missed our connection at Dubai and there would not be a flight for us until Sunday August 13th. We were assured that it was not a problem and the Emirates would pay for a nice hotel for us and fly us on to Manchester on Sunday August 13th.

We arrived in Dubai  at approximately 2pm local time. Went to the carousel to pick our suitcases up. All we wanted to do was to get to the hotel and lie down. By this time we were feeling really ill. We waited and waited. Our suitcases were not there. The carousel had stopped and the attendant said that there was no more coming through. This is the last thing we wanted after being awake so long we were both physically drained.

I found one of the supervisory staff and asked why our luggage was not there and he said that because we were travelling on to Manchester tomorrow morning we would be unable to have it. Because it would be kept in a container at the airport overnight and loaded onto the Manchester flight first thing tomorrow morning. I told him that my wife and I found this unacceptable, we were staying in a hotel in Dubai courtesy of The Emirates and we needed a change of clothes etc. He then advised me to go to the baggage office and explain our situation to a member of staff there.

After explaining our situation to about three different people a really helpful member of staff in the baggage office arranged for our luggage to be offloaded from the container. He told me that it could take some time so we might as well go to our hotel and he would telephone the hotel when the luggage was available to be picked up. The time now was 5pm and we were just about to leave the airport for the hotel after landing at 2pm. Never in our lives had we both ever felt so tired and physically worn out. Instead of looking forward to checking in the hotel and having a nice evening, we were travelling to the hotel knowing that I would have to return to the airport sometime later to pick up our luggage. Also knowing we could not even get changed before going into the hotel restaurant after being in the same clothes for over 18 hours.

We arrived at the Capitol Hotel Dubai at 5-30pm local time. We went straight for a coffee after checking in courtesy of The Emirates and then went to our room. After showering we went to the reception and asked what we were entitled to off the restaurant menu. We were told we could have anything we wanted courtesy of The Emirates. Whilst studying the menu in the restaurant the waiter came up and said we could only have The Emirates set menu. The food was nice but not what we would have chosen had we a choice.

We returned to our room and at 8-30pm the airport rang to tell us that the luggage was ready to be picked. I immediately went downstairs and ordered a taxi to the airport. The round trip cost me approximately £15. I arrived back at The Capitol Hotel at 10pm. We ordered two hot chocolates (nearly £6) then went to bed as we had an alarm call at 4am to leave The Capitol Hotel at 5am prompt so that we could check in for our flight home on Sunday morning.

We left The Capitol Hotel at 5am Sunday morning August 13th after 6 hours sleep, our first since we arose on Friday morning. On arrival at the airport we made our way to the check in desk for the Manchester flight EK35 departing at 7-35am local time. We were then told that we were not booked on the flight and the flight was full. We could not believe what was happening to us. The Emirates had kept our luggage originally for transit to this flight and they had paid for a hotel for us, now they were saying they had no trace of us on the flight.

Lots of negotiations took place after this and I was sent from one person to another then someone came and apologised and said we would have to stay in Dubai another night. This meant we had been awakened at 4am in the morning for a flight we were not even booked on. It was now 10am local time and I had strongly refused to stay another night and demanded that something was sorted out. My wife who is 66 was nearly out of her mind with worry as well as the fact we had hardly slept since Friday.

Eventually things were sorted out and we were given two seats on the London flight at 2-15 pm local time. Once we arrived in London we had to transfer to a British Midland shuttle to Manchester which was also delayed. We finally arrived at our destination in Manchester at 10-30pm Sunday 13th August. Our original flight should have reached Manchester at12-25pm Saturday 12th August. Altogether we were 34 hours late arriving at our destination.

That is the end of my story, which I believe to be true in every detail. My claim for compensation is for the duress my wife and I was put under through no fault of our own. Although I accept that aeroplanes can develop faults and it is not always possible for everything to run perfect, I feel with hindsight that we were sadly let down by The Emirates.

Questions:

Why were we not put in a hotel in Bangkok for the night knowing the length of the delay, instead of being left in Bangkok airport all night with 300 baht between us?

Why were we not on the flight list on Sunday 13th August when The Emirates knew we were in Dubai, they were paying for the hotel?

Why, when you are checked in to stay overnight in Dubai is your luggage checked in for Manchester when it is common sense that people will want there luggage with them if they are staying overnight for a change of clothing etc;

Where would my luggage have ended up if I had not insisted that I take it to The Capitol Hotel with me?

There is no doubt that The Emirates flights are good and your staff first class but I believe your administration leaves a lot to be desired. Throughout this nightmare journey there was not one member of Emirates staff available once they dealt the paperwork out informing us of the flight delay at Bangkok on the Friday night. They remained faceless to say the least.

We are hoping to fly to Thailand at Christmas but after this nightmare return flight I have my doubts whether it would be advisable ever to fly with The Emirates again.

I would like a prompt reply to this compensation claim otherwise I will have no alternative but to forward a copy of this letter to my solicitor, the National newspapers and also BBC Watchdog whom I think will look at this letter with avid interest.

   Sincerely,

Paul and June Hughes

     Dr. Jawad,
I had a very similar situation on Delta Airlines.
In December of 1998 I was en route from Dallas/FT. Worth to Raleigh-Durham,
North Carolina via Atlanta.  The first flight was slightly delayed, but I
still made it to Atlanta with about thirty minutes to spare.  Upon arriving
in Atlanta, I told the gate agent that I was looking for the Raleigh/Durham
connection.  She told me that it had already left and to go down to the main
ticket counter three terminals away.  I scurried over to the ticket counter
and waited in line.  About fifteen minutes later I heard over the loud
speaker the Raleigh-Durham flight was now calling it's final boarding call.
I rushed back to the gate, and saw them pushing the plane back!! I approached
the gate agent and out of breath exclaimed: " You guys told me it had left
already; this is wrong; you guys screwed up!" The gate agent then threatened
to call security if I didn't calm down. I then went back to the main terminal
and waited in line for about three hours.  Finally when I got to the counter,
the agent handed me a goodie bag with shaving kit and tooth brush.  He also
gave me a coupon for a meal, but I had to hurry because the cafe closed in
half an hour. He then put me on stand by for the early morning flight the
next day. He told me to sleep at the gate.  To make a long story short, I did
get on the flight 12 hours later, and just made it home for Christmas.

Subject:   Another horror story for Emirates

We took a family trip from Boston to Dhaka on Dec 28,2000.  Our flights were
re-routed due to a blizzard in Manchester, England Airport.  British Airways
put us up in a hotel because the next flight to Dubau to Dhaka was the
following day. We too were charged 1002 pounds for excess baggage in
Birmingham airport.  We were greeted with only rudeness.  Six of our bags
were of an excess limit and were checked-in at one point.  The ramaining one
bag was checked at the Emirates ticket counter.  When we reached our final
destination, Dhaka we received the six pieces of luggage which we paid 1002
pounds but, the suitcase tagged by the Emirates ticket person never arrived.
We have been told that it was sent to Dakar and not Dhaka.  After 10 trips to
the Dhaka airport to sort thru hundreds and hundreds of suitcases and filing
reports and calling nothing is being done.  This suitcase contains a Bose
stereo which was a gift for my husband.  It took me over a year to save for
the stereo.  They say that they know where the suitcase is but can't do
anything except request it be sent to Dhaka.  What the hell is this??? It's
been over six weeks.  Are there no regulations???  I have written a 3 page
letter to the consumer affairs dept as well as the CEO and the president of
Emirates.  We are totally disgusted.  I WILL NEVER FLY THIS AIRLINES AND I
WILL TELL OTHERS OF THIS WEBSITE AND OF OUR HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE.  IF you have
any suggestions, please e-mail me @ [email protected]

truly a selection of hellish journeys. i sympathise with you.  i took one
of the first flights from birmingham uk to dubai; the ground staff were
nice in uk, but a difference when you got to dubai!  i also had asked for a
seat far from smokers - i was one of the first to check in- but found
myself on row 34, smokers beginning 36.  2 jolly and noisy passengers in
row 36 smoked constantly. they also had drinks, and were getting very
friendly and loud.  the lady in the seat behind me, row 35 was suffering so
much - a young arab woman, perhaps pregnant, or sick, and alhamdulillah the
stewardess found them another seat.  but my daughjter and i suffered.

that is nothing compared to your experience i know, but it's the first time
i've been able to afford to fly emirates, and we looked forward to the
flight! (we usually go PIA, and are almost always satisfied)

i advise you to write to gulf news and khaleej times, and let more people
know your story. even tho it;s some years old now, still it's news!

best wishes
zahara charles.

this is a page for all those who want to post their
messageas and alink to lodge ur compliants.check the
link for that.
anyway i have noticed that a lot of white people are
happy with the airlines thats because they are treated
well because they have white skin and we asians are
darkskin so anything goes with them this is the
attitude emirates is having. i remember a incident
when a white came and told at the checkin cunter that
the local taxi had charged him more money, the
emirates staff got panicked and gave him a upgrade
just to keep their image and if we asians miss the
flight also they are not bothered and in fact very
rude to us.

Subject:   Your Trip On Emirates

I have nothing to do with the airline business, but the tickets we buy from
our Pakistani travel agents are deeply discounted. If you want hotels at
connecting airports buy a full fare ticket (Read two to three thousand
dollars). In your situation Emirates had nothing to do with Aero Asia, your
ticket is priced separately, meaning the fare for the segment on Emirates is
broken out from the fare paid to Aero Asia. This is usually printed in the
bottom half of the ticket. As far as bad treatment on flights to Pakistan, we
cant blame the airlines entirely, ever notice the behavior of our people on
these flights and in general, what would you do if you had to deal with US on
a daily basis.
