Lesson 21: Don't shoot the exploding pineapples with your cross-bow.

I am going to hit you now. When you wake up, we will discuss the reasons WHY I needed to hit you." mumbled the first scholar. They had just finished arguing about why Yankee Doodle stuck a feather in his hat, and furthermore why he called it macaroni.
By now two ancient scholars were talking about running away.
"Why run away?" asked one.
"So you can fall down, look back up, and scream." replied the other.
"Psst, I say we pickpocket that archmage-scholar's pocket!" whispered one of the servant children to the other who were skipping their duties. Immediatley one of the scholars turned to the child and said
"Get away! Brat!" the children had no clue of his accute hearing.

Meanwhile 'The Magus' had been chasing down a couple of vampires in gaseous form that had stolen his gold and so he had used a polymorph spell to change into a griffin. He had chased the vampires to a farmhouse. After he crashed into the ground and rolled for twenty feet, the farmer came out. 'The Magus', still a griffin, tried to warn him about the vampires. He gave him a strange look, then said,
"Ethel, git ma crossbow." 'The Magus' bolted for the barn while yelling, "No! I'm a REALLY POWERFUL NECROMANCER."

In all my time as a narrator, I've had parties run away before, but only once have I seen the players run away in this state of panic. Scortin, our young hero, the young mage, the schoolmarm, the hunter, and Jackal were in the Desert of Desolation, exploring a pyramid tomb. (Okay, they were lost and trying to find a way out) when the hunter and the schoolmarm fell into a spiked pit and died. Then they came across a wondrous indoor garden with beautiful plants and waterfalls. Oddly enough, a grove of palm trees had pineapples on them, and when one of them fell, it exploded, causing a moderate amount of damage. While the rest of the ground were considering taking a couple pineapples along as handy missiles, Jackal said to the narrator with an eager look on his face
"I shoot my crossbow at one up in a tree." As a unit, the players screamed and dove for cover: behind anything they could find. I, the narrator was so impressed with their immediate gut reaction, ruled that they all automatically made their saving jumps, and only lost half damage. Jackal, they all agreed was fair, took full damage and died..
