The story: Sandecker and his staff are flying on a twin turboprop transport from Saigon to a small coastal port north of Da Nang. Unknown to them, the field they are supposed to land on has been overrun by North Vietnamese regulars. Their radio malfunctions and the pilot is unable to receive the warning. Dirk is flying nearby, returning to his base from a bombing mission. The local commander directs him to intercept and alert them by whatever means available. He plays charades from his cockpit, fires several bursts from his guns across their nose, but nothing works. When the plane is on a final landing approach, coming in from the sea toward the airstrip...he shoots out both of the engines, forcing the pilot to ditch the plane in the water only one mile from shore. Dirk then flies cover, strafing enemy boats putting out from the beach, until everyone is taken aboard a Navy patrol vessel.	Deep Six (61)
After Sandecker learns that Dirk Pitt saved the him from certain imprisonment and possible death, they become good friends. Several years later, when President Ford asks Admiral Sandecker to launch NUMA, he persuades Dirk Pitt to join him.	Deep Six (61)
