The REAL Military base (base.wad) Jon Paynter August 13, 1994
This is what the author thinks E1M9 should have been like. It's a good example of what not to do in a WAD. Basically you've got a *big*-ass outside area, with a large ASHWALL building in each corner, a BLULITE building at one end, and a huge GRAY building in the center. Each building is jam-packed with passageways and unmarked doors. Arg. Design sucks and action sucks as well. (Just as an example, behind one unmarked door is a Cyberdemon. No good reason for being there, just is.) You can tell in main building the author had some creativity-it's a shame he can't map. Fans of offbeat design *might* like it, otherwise:

What Lurks Beneath Base12? (Base12.wad)
Scott Tingley and Wesley Leong August 4, 1994
This is a three (but really only two) level WAD with good ideas but somewhat flawed execution. The first level is a base of sorts, which (in my opinion) unfortunately happens to be textured in GRAY. There are some cool ideas but the design just tends to drag a bit. The next level is a tunnel system of sorts beside the base. It starts off with an annoying tunnel maze, goes into a large area with a black tower you climb via very narrow circular steps (which made me realize a Doom II version of this level made it into the Maximum files somehow), goes into an area with four doors, explore behind them, yawn, and ends with an annoying door-switch puzzle (ala House of Pain [E3M4]). The third level crashes both ZDoom and jDoom, which means Im done trying to get it to work. Action is alright. Texturing is somewhat random. Architecture is at some moments really good, and then almost sucks. So overall nothing special. 3/5

Base (base2.wad)
Brian Gemborys September 17, 1995
A medium-sized base level, not surprisingly. Though it's nowhere near this side of realistic, it does have a "base feel" to it, which sets apart a bit form the usual. Texutring goes through all the different base themes, and there's some rather odd x-texture alignments on a few doors. Action is good, and it is a fun WAD overall.

Base 21 (Base21.wad)
Andy Hassall August 27, 1994
This is a smallish-medium sized level that for the most part is very E1 style; it uses the textures, and the level design is very similar as well, with outside areas and skylights. One part is E2 style, with GRAY and CEMENT textures. There are a few somewhat but not too annoying puzzles. Action is pretty easy. Overall, nothing spectacular, but its got an appealing E1 style and its short enough to be fun. 3.5/5

Base Trouble (basetr1.wad)
Tom Capizzi January 2, 1999
This is a short WAD, the first part of which is a SHAWN2 base. The second half briefly explores some REDROCK and then goes into GSTONE. The base rooms are all too big, detail is nonexistent, doors are unmarked, and action is mediocre.

Base (BaseWad.wad)
Brandon TALON Davids August 11, 1994
TALON says he tried to make this level like the original Doom levels, and like FunDuke, says, he does in fact succeed. A little too well. At first, I thought it was going to be an E1-style level, only with even better detail than the original. My entthusiasum waned when I realized some areas were lifted directly from the game. It also starts branching out to other texture styles, so it ends up more like an E3 level. Still, the original areas are quite good, along with the action, and it has a level of detail good enough to make it rise above, especially given when it was made. So check it out. Its small anyways. 4/5

Base (BaseWadA.wad)
KiLaJaJa June 23, 1994
Ohoho. This WAD. This was in the Maximum files. Its utter crap, forget it exists. (On a side note, I was stuck on this level for years because theres a door marked as needing a blue key. One day, on a whim, I decided to try and open it anyway, just for shits and giggles. Bingo! It wasnt locked at all. Asshole.) 1/5

Basilica
Robert Kry September 1997
Nice effort, but it sadly falls short. Let's start with the good. There's a lot of nice new textures which are used extensively, which, a long with some custom sprites, give the WAD its own feel. However, the level sprawls a bit. Most importantly, there's lots of puzzles with no clear answer, puzzles so annoying that I just gave up. Action is alright. You might like the feel of it, so maybe download if you get the chance.

Bastard3
Ben Lagow and Mike Arnett May 30, 1994
The first of this three level set basically sucks. Texturing is random and bad, and level design ain't too great either, though it is still somewhat interesting. The second is alright, with more consistent and better texturing, though level design is a bit annoying, but it also has some nice spots. The third level is pretty nice and worth playing at least for the end. Texturing is more-or-less consistent, and level design is pretty nice with a cool large outside area and a really neat ending. Action is alright in all.

BCDeath1-BCDeath6
Brian and Craig Sparks August 18-September 26, 1994
This is a set of six fun, medium sized levels. Texturing is mainly brown and metal, with the occasional stone. Architecture is good except for the last level. The first two levels are buildings with outside areas, the third is a church (with some other passageways), the fourth is somewhat sprawling level present in the Maximum files, the fifth is a house, and the last one kinda sucks. Overall, a fun level set.

FROM OUT OF THE WAD BIN... 'Bdw' (Bdw.wad)
B.P.R.D. April 1997
Despite what the author says, this set of levels aint that bad. Its an incomplete new episode for Doom, and while the levels all certainly feel as such, a lot of them have some pretty neat architecture and details. E1M1 and E3M8 I particularly liked. But all of E1 is pretty neat, with some instances of E1-style nostalgia that will bring a chill to you. Speaking of chills, E1M1 is FREAKISHLY similar to a dream about Doom I had once. Like, seriously. I liked the first level of E2 but otherwise it didnt do much for me. Like I said, the highlights of E3 are M1 and M8. Theres some pretty nice Hell style there. So on the whole, nostalgia hunters should check out E1, and fans of offbeat design should check out the levels I noted. 3/5

Smoke The Beehive (beehive2.wad)
Rich Carlson March 14, 2004
A fun, short level. Starts off pretty neat, in a battlefield with Barons teleporting in. Soon after you teleport to a somewhat beehive-like area. It plays well, and architecture is pretty good, along with action. The new music is good.

Beholder
Alex Cannon April 2, 1994
This is a short level, designed in that misshapen, totally off-grid style that was common back in the day. Texturing is random. Despite this, it plays well (it's actually a bit tough) and is pretty fun overall. Nostalgia hunters will definitely enjoy it.

Her Belisha Beacon Erased Till Forwards (belishac.wad)
Pablo Dictter May 26, 2004
This is a pretty nice medium-sized base level that I almost missed 'cause of its upload date, heh. It goes through all the base themes. Detail is high (if a bit frivolous) but architecture ain't, if you follow me. Action is good, but ammo is scarce in the beginning (I had to whip out the old knuckle-dusters once or twice). Pretty fun overall.

Ben
Mike Weaver June 16, 1995
This WAD is supposedly loosely based on the where the author works. It comes off somewhat like one of those open-ended base levels, like
Dead Base or level 2 of The Apocalypse Project, only more linear. Texturing is random, action is pretty good. Unfortunately I couldn't figure out how to finish it. 3.5/5

From the Archives (Ben4WADs.wad)
Ben Glover December 12, 1996
This is a collection of four WADs the author made from back in the day.

E1M3Ben
This somewhat short level is pretty good. Design is somewhat canyon-like, deep ooze channels with small "cliffs". Texturing is random but good-looking. Action is pretty good.

E1M4Ben
Another fun smallish-medium level. Design is again big and open (though not as much as
E1M3Ben), and architecture is pretty good. Texturing is brown. Action is good. 4/5
--
E3M1Ben
This smallish level starts off similar to the beginning of E3M1. Afterwards it turns into a marble temple-ish/tech base level. Architecture is good, but texturing is crap, especially in the base sections. It also has that nice big, open design. Action is good.

E3M2Ben
This smallish level takes place around a large building in a cavern of sorts. Design is pretty neat, and definitely unique. Texturing is pretty good, and action is good as well.

Berserk (BerserkJ.wad)
Jon Landis June 13, 1994
Wow, this is an utterly classic WAD. Sprawling (but only about medium-sized), totally random texture changes, and good, fast-paced action. Nostalgia hunters will definitely love it; everyone else should have fun too. 3.5/5

Siawn Hy's Keep (Beta7.wad)
Siawn Hy August 15, 1994
Despite the hokey text file and the authors preposterous request that people pay to keep receiving updates, this level is playing for keeps. Its the sort that slowly unfolds as you play, one of my favorite kinds, personally. Its only medium sized, but the action is so tough thatll last quite awhile. Its damn near impossible on single playerfortunately, the author gives you permission to respawn (i.e. IDDQD to restore your health) twenty-five times, which is more than enough to kill almost everything twice over. But like I said, ammo and health are scarce, so watch it. Overall, a tough, interesting levelcheck it out. 4/5

Beware
Greytale July 7, 1994
This is E2M6 from
Darkhell. It's a big, somewhat sprawling level, totally off-grid. Texturing is random and crappy. Action is pretty good. Something that's nice is that gameplay is somewhat open-ended, so there's a variety of routes to take. 3/5

Be Warned Paul Cooper July 31, 1994
I believe there was a Doom2 version of this in the Maximum files. This is a small Wad, mostly off-grid, texturing mostly random, action pretty easy. I guess you could say its notable for its large room with a preposterous amount of cacodemons within. You could have some fun there. Otherwise:

The Beyond (Beyond.wad) Michel September 20, 1994
A big, sprawling "mansion" WAD. Texturing is random, action is okay. I got stuck and gave up.
