Louis, his mother, and his step-father fled from France to Holland and Mannheim, Germany to escape religious persecution as Huguenots. As a married man with two children, Louis arrived in New Amsterdam on board the ship St. Jan Baptiste on 6 August 1661. They settled first in Hurley where Louis' wife Catharine and her three children were carried off by Indians after the massacre in 1663; Louis was among the rescuers who pursued the Indians. On another occasion Louis, who was known as the Walloon or Louis de Wall, narrowly escaped from several Indians who tried to ambush him as he followed a runaway ox. In 1670, Louis was an "Overseer for the Townes of Marbleton and Hurley" and was commissioned a Lieutenant for the Foote Company of the Militia in 1675. In 1677, Louis was the acknowledged leader of the New Paltz Patentees in establishing that town in Ulster Co., NY. He was also the first elder of the church in New Paltz. In 1686, Louis moved back to Kingston, Ulster Co., NY. He was buried in the First Dutch Church at Kingston.
