| The history of the Gamma Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is very limited because the true historical records and files are no longer in the chapter's possession. The majority of the files were kept in a dormitory named Stone Hall. This hall which was tragically destroyed by a fire, was used predominantly as a dormitory for members of Greek Lettered Organizations. The only fragments of the chapter's history that remain from this tragic occurrence were the charter, photographs of the chapter members, and excrution. The history written here is based upon the scarce amount facts that were passed down orally. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In 1923 the Gamma Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded by Wilbourne Loraine Russel and Escous Blackwell Goode; who are presently living in Mobile, Alabama. In 1924 twenty-three members were chartered in Gamma Psi including Goode and Russell. In 1939 twelve members crossed into the Gamma Psi Chapter. The program for making new brothers was a form of the intake process that is presently in effect, but was highly influenced by the blackball concept. In the 1950's, the Greek Letter Organizations at Talladega College started contributing gifts to the college. The Brothers of the Gamma Psi Chapter contributed a bulletin board that was placed in the mainstream of the campus. The brothers also built a sundial in the front of the Talladega College Savery Library. In 1962, The Brothers of the Gamma Psi Chapter, despite the opposition they encountered from the college administration , laid the first Greek Letter Organizational stone of the campus. The stone was laid directly behind the bulletin board and directly in front of Silsby Science Building. The stone was at the center of the campus for all on lookers to take notice of. In 1971 Marvin Harris made the excrution for the chapter and Bernard Bark gave it to the brothers of the Gamma Psi Chapter. The year of 1972, The LARGEST LINE KNOWN TO GAMMA PSI was crossed. The line consisted of twenty-five brothers and were called The "Mighty Quarter". The line was pledged by four bruhs - the "Fantastic Four" who entered the chapter in 1971. In 1990, The Brothers of the Gamma Psi Chapter revised the Fraternity stone. The Brothers of the Gamma Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated have withstood the tests of time and continue to live by the Fraternity's principles of, MANHOOD, SCHOLARSHIP, PERSEVERANCE, UPLIFT. And the legacy continues...... |
