NEWS FROM NEW SOUTH WALES ~~~ CHARLES GALEA
< Dear fellow teachers
I read with great interest of the hard work all of you are doing through the emails Rhonda has sent me. It seems that I have been left out of this loop of emails. It is important to continue communicating and to focus on the tasks ahead and achieve all the outcomes we have set to achieve without sidetracking on other issues.
I thought that I have already sent the exact number of students to Francis. As Rhonda said in 2008 NSW we have 5 students sitting the HSC, in 2009 we will have 4 students and in 2010 there may be 1 only unless things change. In 2011 we have 2 students and in 2012 we will have 3 students sitting for the HSC. I am working with figures that I have now at this moment. Things may change. Students can drop off or lose their enthusiasm to study Maltese. We are dealing with a very fragile mission that we can't afford to make one single mistake if we want to succeed.
As you know ,together with the Akkademja, Rhonda and I were able to reach a landmark decision in that the SSCL would receive adult students in our school free of charge. This has been a first for the SSCL and the Maltese language in NSW. These adults now have the backing and orientation that they need to pursue Maltese studies. What an impact these adults have left on the other students? These will be the teachers that will disseminate in a concrete way the Maltese language in our community.
The adult and distant students would not feel alienated but be part of the program, standards, assessments and professional guidance like other students in the SSCL. This has been in the making for the last 13 years and finally it has been achieved. The door of opportunity now has been opened for all Maltese of good will who want to know their roots and deepen their love of Maltese culture and language. We hope that we will have more Maltese ready to come forward and become 'flames' that can spread the love of Maltese among our community.
I hope that Rosanne now has some figures to work on and if more information is needed please don't hesitate to write
Dejjem taghkom,

>NEWS FROM VICTORIA ~~~ EDWIDGE BORG
Dear Professor Carter

I understand from discussions with the Maltese Consul General in Victoria that you have recently visited Malta and in particular had discussions with the University of Malta. The Federation of Maltese Language Classes in Australia is endeavouring to maintain the teaching of the Maltese Language leading to VCE level.
The Saturday School of Languages (SSL) in Taylors Lakes is the only venue that provides VCE Classes in Victoria. SSL classes in other centres have closed because of lack of participation. The conflicting priorities and reason for non attendance mostly given is that Saturday mornings clash with other school activities held during the same time. The problem with decreasing number of students is further accentuated with only one venue in the Western suburbs.
Another problem facing the Maltese community is finding qualified teachers to teach Maltese as a second language and limited text books and workbooks to teach Maltese as a second language. Maltese as a foreign language is already taught in Malta and the University of Malta offers a course which leads to an accredited certificate. With the limited resources available in Australia my aim is to have an online course that would be available to subscribers worldwide wishing to learn Maltese. Ultimately from an Australian perspective and as an added incentive, I would like to have the course recognised at least as at VCE level with the incentive to prospective university students having exam accredited to their TER score.
I am visiting Malta next week and intend visiting key stakeholders who might be able to collaborate on this venture in the first instance as well as discuss other possible alternatives. However, I would like to speak to you, preferably by phone as time is running short on the future possibility of having this course under the Umbrella of the Victoria University as the Australian representative to supervise any oral or written exams.
If you could call me on the number listed below I would greatly appreciate it as I am flying out on Saturday.
Kind Regards
Federation of Maltese Language Schools

NEWS FROM VICTORIA ~~~ ROSEANNE PIROTTA I have sent the email below to yourself and HE so as to clarify what was happening.
HE was told that there were 14 students sitting for the exam and he had spoken to you to see if there could be other candidates. I understood that there had been and they had enrolled. I am not sure whether we lost anyone for NSW which resulted in us being one short this year. Victoria has worked hard and brought students forward to make up the numbers. In fact, each year, the large majority of students was coming from Victoria so we have been taking the issue very seriously.
The Federation was formed so that we could all work together. It is definitely not up to me to come up with the ideas to make up the numbers. This is an issue which the whole Federation, and indeed the whole Maltese community needs to take responsibility for. My colleagues and I here in Victoria have been working hard to let the community here know the situation and have been advertising the classes through all the possible media and the associations. I will definitely not take responsibility for the poor show from other states. That is something that the other states have to answer for. If we did not make up the numbers this year, that has nothing to do with Victoria - as I had mentioned in the first email I sent, we have 10 Vic students sitting the exam.
I have sent out an email to gather the stats for next year - so far I can only say that I have only received replys from Carmel Baretta and Judy Pavia who have advised that as they have just started classes, they have not reached the level as yet. In Victoria, we have pushed all our VCE students to sit for the exam this year which means that we will only have possibly one student sitting next year. He is in Malta at the moment so we still cannot give a definite answer as to whether he is still interested. I have not received anything from any of the other schools as yet.
Rather than put the issue back to me I think that we should realise that unless we work together, we are not going to move forward.
Regards
Roseanne Pirotta
