The Star Wars Saga

There is nothing new that I can say about Star Wars that isn't already expressed somewhere else on the Internet. Everybody knows about it. Anybody who hasn't seen the movies deserves to die (IMHO). So what's left for me to do? Not much...

In case you didn't know ("Welcome to 21st Century Earth"), the Star Wars movies are:

  1. Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
  2. Episode II: Attack of the Clones (May 22nd, 2002?)
  3. Episode III: ?
  4. Episode IV: A New Hope (1977),
    Special Edition (1997)
  5. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980),
    Special Edition (1997)
  6. Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983),
    Special Edition (1997)

The Star Wars Roleplaying Game

Currently, there are two camps of Star Wars RPG: the "old" West End Games D6 system, and the "new" Wizards of the Coast D20 system. Since I am a member of the first, my Star Wars RPG page (that I hope to put up one of these days) will be covering material of/for the D6 system.

The Star Wars Customizable Card Game

I used to think that Star Wars: the Customizable Card Game (CCG), from Decipher, was boring, complicated, and a waste of money. Well, it is still complicated, and probably still a waste of money (and time)... but I no longer find it boring.

Originally, I had bought the PREMIERE Introductory Set. This boxed set has enough for two players to start playing, and every box had exactly the same cards. Unfortunately, the games that resulted with these cards became very unappealing very quickly. I also found the rules to be initially very tedious. During just about every game I played, I had to flip through the rules booklet at least twice. I didn't want to buy any expansion cards because I was scared that it would not improve the game. PLUS, THE EXPANSION (BOOSTER) SETS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE.

This was my mind set until my brother received some cards as a Christmas gift. Somehow, this sparked my interest in the game again (maybe because there now was someone I could actually play the game with). So I went out and bought several expansions. Not only did these cards improve gameplay, but they also opened me to the joy of customizing my own decks.

So, sure... it's an expensive form of entertainment (as if $7 for a movie ticket isn't expensive). And sure... I still occasionally have to clarify a rule or something in Decipher's GLOSSARY. But with an adequate collection of cards, the possibilities of gameplay are endless and the boredom disappears (along with some patience and a good chunk of a paycheck =J ).

The Star Wars books, novels, and comics

There are several dozen books out there which are Star Wars related, and most of them are novels which give an official account of the events that don't appear in the movies. Almost everything from the tales of the original Jedi Knights to the adventures of Jacen and Jaina Solo (twin children of Han and Leia) can be found between the covers of a Star Wars paperback or comic.

Of course, there are books that really don't tell a story, but are more informational... like The Star Wars Technical Journal. These kinds of books are really fun and useful if you want to, say, know how hyperdrives and lightsabers work. So as you can see, books are still one of the richest sources of information.

The Star Wars video games

No matter what type of game, or what platform to play on, there is a Star Wars game that has it covered. Everything from the 3D shoot-'em-up, to space flight simulator, to puzzle, to strategy... and from PC to just about every game console. Star Wars will be there. Most (if not all) of the games come from the LucasArts Entertainment Company. Go check them out!

The Star Wars toys

I am not a toy collector or hobbyist, so I don't have much to say here. In the '80s, the action figures from the original releases were abundant. Then there was about a 12 year lull until Shadows of the Empire and the Special Edition releases caused a massive return of the action figures for the younger generation. Now the toy stores are really booming with Episode I products, too. Besides action figures, there is also a market of Legos(TM) and MicroMachines(TM).
