Mississippian Artifacts
The most famous artifact from Moundville, the Rattlesnake Disk.  As the markings on stone palettes are sometimes difficult to make out, I have placed a sketch next to it.
An assortment of artifacts from Spiro, photographed in 1936.
Included are ceremonial axes, the Resting Warrior effigy pipe, engraved conches and various jewelry items.

The Birdman Tablet.  The official symbol for the Cahokia Mounds.  Click on the picture

There is more to be seen at Mississippian sites than mounds.  This page has just a few of the artifacts that can be seen in the museums at these sites.  Pottery, jewelry, effigy pipes and ancient tools are just some of the items on display.  Replicas are sometimes substituted for the real thing because of security, research
or loan purposes.  Don't be
too surprised when you see artifacts that originated at one site and were discovered at another.  In addition, there are great nature trails that feature the nearby rivers.
