| - "I have been watching Chinese movies for the seven years � the ones in the festival circuit. Sony Classical and Columbia Pictures are producing the movie. It was Sony�s head who had offered me the film Warriors of Heaven and Earth. It�s about the silk route from China through Turkey to India. My music is a mix of Indian, Turkish and Chinese. The director He Ping had heard my Lagaan and Vande Mataram albums and liked them so much that he made a �temp-track� and used it in his film, which quite impressed me. The musical score was done in Prague, London and mixing here in Chennai in my studios with a sound engineer from the US." - A.R.Rahman [New Indian Express] Synopsis - Swordplay epic during China's Tung Dynasty involving the shipment of a sacred bone of Buddha artifact. This film, heavy with swordplay, revolves around a caravan during China's Tang Dynasty, in the western territories, that is carrying a sacred bone of the Buddha. The caravan, however, is just the setting, as the film follows several characters, each with different motives, including An, who plans to steal the bone... Set during the Tang Dynasty captain Li Zai (Jiang), was chased by cop Raisei (Kiichi) a former Japanese diplomatic student. Meanwhile a caravan carrying sacred bone of the Buddha, leader of a group of bandits An (Wang) who want to rob the caravan, and Wen Zhu (Zhao), a general's daughter, all bumped into their battle. - The action director of WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, Leung Siu-Hung, has recently been interviewed by Chinese media. He said, "it is a wuxia film, but director He Ping didn't know how to make action scenes. He often use six cameras to shoot the same fight simultaneously and to catch the right moments from different directions and angles. He basically relies on editing to show each move. He Ping never paid much attention on how to make a fight beautiful. Rather, he emphasized on the whole scene and characters' emotions. He never wanted the moves to be fancy, but demanded them to be suitable to a person's character and the plot. So we abandoned the traditional fancy moves, and turned our focus on using moves to reflect a character's feeling and also making some new changes among simple fight moves." Unlike many martial-art films like CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, this movie never relied on wire-fu and all moves obey the rules of physics. All the characters can do is just jumping onto horseback from the ground and were never able to "fly". He said, "even though it's "real fight", we cannot let someone got killed by just one punch and still made the moves somewhat beautified and exaggerated. [Monkey Peaches] Filming - Production started on July 19th, 2001 in Xinjiang, an area in northwest China. Ffilming was also done in Beijing. CURRENT STATUS - World premiere - September 23, 2003...Wide Release - October 1, 2003. On September 23, the world premiere of Warriors of Heaven and Earth will debut in six major cities in China: Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Gunangzhou, Xi'an, and Shenyang. During the limited release run, screenings will occur twice daily. (This is basically an Oscar qualification run. To be eligible for Oscars' best foreign language film category, the movie must be shown in not less than one commercial theater for at least seven consecutive days before September 30, 2003.) The film will be in general release on China's National Day this year, October 1, 2003, and will play on a total of 240 screens throughout China. US Release in October 2003. The film is scheduled for release in India on January 9, 2004 [Delhi-based Nitin Bhikchandani of Columbia Tristar, the distributors of the film told this to UNI].
