Six Sigma Page

These series of pages will relate my experiences and journey to becoming a Six Sigma Black Belt. There will be four series of pages: (1) an introduction/links/thoughts group of pages, (2) pages relating the 4 weeks of training, (3) pages documenting the project that I am improving and (4) pages containing book reviews of books read for the Six Sigma class.

Instructor

Aimee Cowher teaches our Six Sigma class. She started her own company, Sigma Services Ltd., to train and consult in Six Sigma. Her background (Aimee, if you read this, please let me know any errors or additions) include a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's degree in Management. She worked for the Power Train division of General Motors and also for the automotive division of Allied Signal prior to starting her own company. At Allied Signal she earned her Master Black Belt status and then felt this was the direction she wanted to go.

Background

Technimark decided to proceed on a Six Sigma course after our Quality Manager attended a Black Belt training course at Black and Decker. Our President also attended an executive day on Six Sigma. We agreed that it would be good training for our group of managers. The training provides a good methodology for problem solving and continuous improvement. Six Sigma would also go hand in hand with our Kontinuous Improvement Through Evolution program and our Toyota Production System elements. Six Sigma bolsters these programs by providing the ability to work with data proficiently.

I was apprehensive about the training...not from the viewpoint that I thought I would have problems, but I believed that it would be tedious, boring, repetitive and non-value added to someone with my background. Although I would like to report that none of the above was true, that would be a lie. However, it would also be incorrect to say that the training was bad...it was not...it was excellent.

For someone with a significant statistics and quality background, a lot of the information was simply review (some very boring review!), but, on the whole, it is proving to be a very good review. I posted this page after week one...it was an interesting week, so click on the link for that week and go see!!

Book Reviews

Special thanks on this page go to Aimee Cowher, my Black Belt instructor. Her intelligence, patience, good spirits and willingness to argue ;-) made the program bearable. Aimee works as a Six Sigma consultant and is available for training others in these techniques. I will post her website when it is available.
