Spain 2000
Cares Gorge - Picos De Europa
Cares Gorge - Picos De Europa
Here's a couple of pictures of the Cares Gorge, that you have to visit if you're in the area. It was an absolutely sweltering day and because the Rough Guide to Spain said you couldn't drive to Posada, we walked about four miles downhill in blistering heat, before deciding that in fact you could drive, so we walked the four miles back uphill. If there hadn't been lots of spouts of fresh mountain spring water to collapse at, I'm sure my skeleton would be lying by the side of that road to this day. Bloody Rough Guide!

The bridge on the left hand photo can only take the weight of one person at a time, there are big faded signs at either end of the bridge telling you this in several languages, and it's something you bear in mind as you look down at the holes in the concrete below your feet. It's also something you bear in mind when you go round the next corner and there's the remains of a collapsed bridge angled ominously downward towards the river far, far below. Then you remember you have to make the return journey.
