Well, here's Karl and Friedrich on Alexanderplatz in the old East Berlin. The building with the dome in the background is Berlin Cathedral. As you can see the weather wasn't great while we were there, but the second photo was taken on our last day in Berlin when we got a bit of blue sky. In the few days we were in Berlin I think this spot has to be my favourite place. It's fairly deserted, there's plenty of space and it's also eerily quiet as there seems to be very little traffic in the city centre (unlike London). I came back to this spot on my own to say au revoir and reflect a little when we left. I also like the way Marx and Engels gaze up at the Fernsehturm (TV tower) as if stamping their approval on the achievements of the East German state. Ironically, the Fernsehturm was built by Swedish engineers. When the sun shines on the "golfball" the light reflects back in the shape of a cross. West Berliners dubbed this effect as "The Pope's Revenge" which struck me as being a bit odd as Germany isn't exactly reknowned for it's Roman Catholisism. |
