Types of Working Holidays
Details of each Working Holiday are given in a National Trust booklet (and on the volunteers web site). This information includes a brief description of the work to be undertaken, plus the category into which the holiday is categorised. These categories allow potential volunteers to decide if the holiday would be suitable for them.
The categories are as follows:
| ACORN | General countryside conservation
tasks. (no skills or experience required) Age Range: 17 to 60. Cost: £66 (26 June to 28 Aug), £55 other dates. |
| ARCHAEOLOGICAL | Digging and clearance tasks mainly, but an interest in archaeology would be useful. Age Range: 18 to 60. Cost: £66 (26 June to 28 Aug), £55 other dates. |
| CONSTRUCTION | Repair dry stone walls or renovate estate
buildings etc. under skilled instruction. Experience useful, but an
interest in building work and a keenness to learn are vital. Safety
footwear essential Age Range: 18 to 60. Cost: £66 (26 June to 28 Aug), £55 other dates. |
| EVENTS | Help in setting up, running and
dismantling events such as fetes, horse trials, country fairs and concert
extravaganzas. Experienced volunteers especially welcome. Age Range: 18 to 60. Cost: £66 (26 June to 28 Aug), £55 other dates. |
| OAK | Working holidays especially for you if you
are 35 or over. Age Range: 35 - 70. Cost: £66 (26 June to 28 Aug), £55 other dates. |
| OAK PLUS | Working holidays especially for you if you
are 50 to 70. Cost: £66 (26 June to 28 Aug), £55 other dates. |
| 21 PLUS | Working holidays especially for you if you
are 21 to about 35. Cost: £66 (26 June to 28 Aug), £55 other dates. |
| SHORT BREAK | Two or three days of countryside
conservation. Age Range: Minimum 18. Cost: £29. |
| TOUCHWOOD | Offers the chance for volunteers to work
with others who have special needs or disabilities. Experience of working
with people with special needs would be welcome, but not essential. General countryside conservation tasks. Age Range: 18 to 60. Cost: £40. |
| TRUST ACTIVE | Countryside conservation work and outdoor
pursuits under the guidance of qualified instructors. Hill walking,
abseiling, canoeing, mountain biking or rock climbing may be planned. Age Range and Cost: Individually priced. |
| VENTURE | Work and socialise with volunteers from
other countries. About 6 volunteers from the UK will work with 6 from other European countries (English will be spoken.) Conservation, cultural visits and tours. Age Range: Minimum 18. Cost: £80 unless otherwise stated. |
| WILDTRACK | Ideal for biology students, amateur
naturalists, botanists or wildflower enthusiasts who can learn how to
carry out vegetation surveys, species recording or mapping. Age Range: 18 to 70. Cost: £66 (26 June to 28 Aug), £55 other dates. |
