INDESINENCE interview for Dark Recollections 'zine

Interview answered by Ilia- Chris

1.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Give us a brief band bio...

Ilia: Chris and I were involved in a number of projects over the years. Our paths converged in Antigone, a band dabbling in all things Death, Black and Occult, which remained firmly entrenched in the UK underground throughout its existence. Antigone provided us with invaluable experience and no shortage of good times, but it was a relatively short-lived project in terms of recordings, as it imploded after the release of our second demo. Fast forward through two years of doing other things and -in some cases- pursuing other musical avenues, until we decided the time was ripe to create some Metal again, albeit of a far more crushing variety than anything we had ever been involved in before. We got together to think out a masterplan. We had some drinks.
We found out that Dani and John- whom we already knew as people and musicians, having shared the stage with some of their old bands- wanted to play music more crushing than anything they had ever been involved in. They liked our approach and we liked theirs, and they joined in the masterplan immediately. We got the drinks in. Early ideas were promptly realised in the "Ecstatic Lethargy" demo and a handful of apparently well-received gigs. This (and a few further rounds of drinks) has brought us where we are now. Sorry, that wasn't exactly brief, was it?

2. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Introduce band members... who does what, plays what instruments...

Chris - Guitars, Guns & Grimnity
Dani Drums, Triangle & Cowbells
Ilia - Guitar, Vocals, Infernal Sonics, Mouth organ
John Bass, Synths, Horns, Mellotron

3. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: How long has current line up been together... is this the original line up?

Chris: Dani and John joined in 2002 and the Ecstatic Lethargy demo was released early in 2003. We had been writing the music since 2001 but it all really came together when we became a 4 piece. This has been the one and only incarnation of Indesinence thus far.

4. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: why was INDESINENCE chosen as a name for the band... who came up with the name?

Ilia: Guilty as charged, I guess. We spent good time working on the conceptual side of the band and demo around their inception time, and attempting to extract some ideas or single words that would best sum up what was going on. "Indesinence" was the one word we all found it easiest to agree on. I came across its adjective form, "indesinent", whilst pursuing some inspirational reading. Then it just hit me- the concept of endlessness and continuity that rules existence and can be applied to a myriad concepts in life seemed to encompass a lot of the themes that inpire us (some of happen to be interlinked by man's fear of passing and the unknown, and our inherent difficulty in accepting that there is plenty of life and time to go beyond our brief individual stay here). There are other, less obvious connections I could spend hours exlaning until you were really bored and begging me to please shut up. We found it fitting, apt and pleasing to the ear, as well as suitably arcane-sounding. In actual fact, we're not even certain that "indesinence" actually exists as a noun, given the precious few texts and books in which it appears, thus making it that little bit more Metal and Old-School!

5. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What kind of response did your demo "Ecstatic Lethargy" receive from the metal underground.. was there any other demos released.. how did they do?

Chris: 'Ecstatic Lethargy' was our only demo, and it seems to have been very well received. Check out www.indesinence.com to read every review we have had for it. I have read comments about us on the net stating that we weren't 'true' doom enough. I don't mind as it's not my sole intention to play that way. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but I enjoy writing Death metal and slow Death Metal which some people prefer to see as funeral doom. It's just the way it's worked out.
Ilia: It seemed to be well-received. The CDRs sold out pretty quickly (including the re-press) and most reviews were overwhelmingly positive. How many copies an Indesinence album will sell, however, is entirely another matter. We'll have to wait on that one. Personally, I can't say negative feedback worries me. I don't want to imply that we are above criticism or anything, but we do what we do our way and people can take it or leave it; it's that simple. Setting our ideas to music the best way we can is top priority; having people enjoy it is certainly a bonus. We're not doing this to get rich- you can be sure of that.

6. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Talk about your upcoming Cd release on Weird Truth Productions?

Chris: We're very excited to be able to work with WTP. This EP named 'Neptunian' contains 5 songs in total. The first is a track called 'Neptunian'. It's heavy track and entrances you as you listen to it. It has a majestic feel to it, but without making you think of swords. Track 2 is a cover we did of Cocteau Twins' "Garlands". That song has a great guitar part, and slowed down it sounds most evil. It's ended up being twice as long as the original (Or thereabouts for anyone who wants to pick me up on that). Tracks 3, 4 & 5 are a remastered version of the 2003 demo 'Ecstatic Lethargy'. We thought it would be good to put this on for any fans that didn't get a chance to get a copy of the original. This way the 'Neptunian' EP contains all our tracks thus far in one place. It's also a build-up to the full length due to be released on Goat Of Mendes records.

7. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: How would you describe your music to someone who has not heard it yet?

Ilia: Not without difficulty. I still find it hard to figure out any clever descriptions beyond the obvious "Metal" term. It's all too easy to recurr to phrases such as "Doom Death", "Underground Metal", "Old School Metal", which are often as vague as they are futile (although we realise it's often a necessary evil), so in an ideal situation, I would just refer people to the music itself and let them make up their own minds. I guess it feels odd being asked to categorise your own music too specifically. That is the primary reason why we decided to make some snippets available on our website.
Chris: Grim.
Ilia: Grim!! Yes. That'll do just fine.

8. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Not too many bands play your style of music... which style would you say is harder to play... fast and brutal stuff, or slow , midpaced , heavy stuff?

Ilia: Both approaches present their respective challenges and advantages from a technical point of view and in terms of performance. We feel at reasonable ease with both, at least to the extent and within the context in which we choose to employ them. The creative process can wind up being quite intuitive; we're keen to simply go with the flow and expand on whatever type of pace or dynamics the individual song or moment requires. If this means having to push ourselves into playing faster or slower than usual, we're more than happy to do just that. Ultimately, they've both proved integral to the bands' sound so far.

9. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: What can we expect in the near future for INDESINENCE? (new Cd, demo?)

Chris: The Full length album called 'Noctambulism' will be out through Goat Of Mendes records this year. An exact date will be announced through our website nearer the time. It's far more extreme than the demo in that we play faster and we play slower. Anyone who's seen us live will know the 10 minute section where only 3 riffs are played. It's a great part and it sounds even better in recorded form.
Ilia: We made a point of ensuring that every new Indesinence recording would be heavier and more harrowing than the last, and we are trying our best to ensure the album is a continuation of that intent. Tracking for "Noctambulism" will most likely have been completed by the time this goes to print. We've been having talks with Greg Chandler (Esoteric) for a good while, and it looks like we will be working with him on the final mixing of the album. I am very excited about this; we've known Greg for a while and being familiar with his work as a musician and producer, we have no doubt he is the man for the job. We're aiming to have the album out before 2006 is over.

10. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Is INDESINENCE a studio band, or do you get to play live... what are some of the bands you have shared the stage with?

Ilia: We have played a handful of live shows. We try not to overdo this side of the band. This is partly due to the fact that we give very much of ourselves at the shows, which has often resulted in them turning out quite intense and exhausting for us; so I guess we have a natural tendency to not play live that much. This isn't a band you could exploit with solid 6-month tours, it just doesn't seem financially (or indeed physically) sound, at least at this point. Having said that, we do read and consider every offer we receive.
We have fond memories of on- and offstage stage time shared with The River, Esoteric, Dam, Centurions' Ghost, Thee Plague of Getlemen, Moss, Imindain and a few others.

11.DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Has there been any interest from any labels to release your music on vinyl?

Ilia: None at the moment. We'd be more than happy for this to happen if the labels we work with agreed to it, but we are also very aware of the difficulty and the cost involved.

12. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Any merchandise available from the band? (list items and prices)
Neptunian MCD: 6
T-Shirts (S, M, L, XL: 8)

13. DARK RECOLLECTIONS: Last words, comments? Thanks for the interview...

Ilia: Thanks very much for giving us the opportunity to answer this questions, Wilhelm. I bet you can't believe I managed an answer this short! I'll keep quiet now before I screw it up... Only deaf is real!
