To be fair, the same dedicated fans also know him as Agent Hai To in The Kid with the Golden Arm (1978), the blind man in Crippled Avengers (1978), Lo Hsin in Flag of Iron (1980), Kuo Yau in Masked Avengers (1981), the Black Fox in House of Traps (1982), Mad Dog in John Woo's Hard Boiled (1992), and even the evil General Chang in the James Bond epic Tomorrow Never Dies (1997). But its his iconic Lizard from Chang Cheh's seminal cult masterpiece Five Deadly Venoms (1978) that many remember with the most fondness.
But even those impressive credits are just scratching the surface of Kwok's accomplishments. In addition to his memorable Woo and 007 performances, he also served as action coordinator for both films, not to mention dozens of other important movies from all over the world - including such unforgettable action efforts as A Chinese Ghost Story (1987), Story of Ricky (1992), The Bride With White Hair (1993), and Brotherhood of the Wolf (2002).
"I only steal because I'm hungry!" Born in the Year of the Rabbit, Choy followed in his father's footsteps onto the stage and cinema in his home country of Taiwan, despite the fact that he had accidentally chopped off several of his fingers in a 1964 accident! His skill kept his handicap virtually invisible, and when the legendary director Chang Cheh brought him to Hong Kong in the early 70's, he began to create a legend of his own. After more than fifty films as star or action director, Kowk is considered one of the most dependable and important "action men" working today...and working and working! He is almost as revered for his work ethic as his abilities.
"I'll tell you the truth," he confesses. "There's very little I enjoy doing more than action." |
