They were even more impressed to learn that grandma Chui experienced in person both the Loma Prieta on Oct 17, 1989 and Northridge earthquake on Jan 17, 1994. Daddy took the chance to go over some earthquake drills with them. The twins asked daddy to measure their height after dinner. Jasmine measured 49 inch and a fraction. Joanne was about quarter inch shorter. Joanne said she was as tall as Jasmine if she wore her slippers.

Thursday, Oct 20, 2005 (8y+2m+14d)
The twins took the morning off from school to take the piano exam. Jasmine said she did okay. Joanne said she did badly in the sight reading. We won't know their score until the report arrives in a few weeks. The twins returned to school after lunch. In the afternoon, Benjamin and Christopher's family came to our house to play. The twins did their book report after dinner. It was just the first draft, but both wanted to do it on the computer. They did their own typing. Daddy helped them format the output and printed on paper. When mommy checked their math homework, she was not happy about the messy writing. She ordered the twins to do the work over again before they could go to bed. The work was rejected at least three more times because the writing was messy. It was 11pm when the twins went to bed. I wonder if the twins were too tired to write properly at the late hours.
When daddy tucked the twins in bed, I noticed that Jasmine climbed into her bed from the foot of her bed. I commented that Jasmine used to always climb into bed via Joanne's bed. Jasmine said she stopped doing that like two weeks ago after Joanne complained about it. I said it must be difficult to change a habit that she had been doing for the past 7 years. Jasmine commented that it could not have been 7 years because they used to sleep in cribs in our old house. The twins started talking about how the old house look like, how their bedroom used to be. Joanne said she used to sleep on the window side and Jasmine slept near the closet door. They went on and on about what kind of toys they used to have; how grandma's room was when she lived with us. I was really amazed how much the twins remembered from the pre-school years. I had to interrupt them because it was well past bedtime.
Friday, Oct 21, 2005 (8y+2m+15d)
The twins went to school as usual. They had a fundraising walkathon in school today. They were happy to receive some toy gifts for participating. Mommy gave them math exercise in the afternoon. They were given ample time to double check their answers. Mommy wanted them to make sure all the mistake were corrected before handing it in. The rule was that for each mistake in the answer, they had to do an extra page of exercise. Jasmine was careful and got all answers right. Joanne was sloppy. She got errors in the first page, and then in subsequent penalty pages, she made more mistakes. At the end, she accumulated 5 pages of exercise to complete, but Jasmine could go off on her own to play. They practice piano after dinner.
Saturday, Oct 22, 2005 (8y+2m+16d)
The twins got up early. Mommy went downstairs to cook them breakfast and then returned to bed. Mommy went to play tennis in the morning. The twins played with their sticky hand toy they got from the walkathon yesterday. It was a sticky piece of hand shape rubber. They slung it around to let it stick to walls and snap back. They were screaming and laughing with so much joy that daddy couldn't stay in bed. Daddy prepared the bicycles in the garage. Jasmine helped daddy inflate the tires. When mommy returned from tennis, she cooked us instant ramen for a quick lunch. Joanne said she liked instant ramen more than the original authentic ramen in Japanese restaurant. She had good taste, or at least her taste was better for daddy's pocket book.
We went bicycling at the park closed to the twins' school. We invited Rachael to ride with us. After many rounds circling the park, we stopped at the playground. The kids played in the playground for a long time. We then circled more before we parted our way. We bought takeout for dinner. The dishes were chosen by the twins. After dinner, we watched "Air force One" on TV. The twins watched with us. It was a violent movie, but the twins seemed to enjoy it. They were sent to bed right after the movie finished at 10pm.

Both of them chose to read Calvin and Hobbes. Daddy purchased the new "The complete Calvin and Hobbes" 3 volume book set. Suddenly the twins inherited daddy's original set of C&H books. That sparked off more reading. Jasmine was particularly hooked with the comic. She occasionally had a big laugh. She put post-it notes on the pages that she loved. Mommy had to ordered them away from the comic when it was bedtime.

Saturday, Oct 29, 2005 (8y+2m+23d)
Mommy got up early and prepared breakfast for the twins. Then she went to play tennis. She came back in about half an hour because the court was wet due to rain earlier. We changed our plan and we went to Sausalito about 50 miles to the north. We have tried to get in the Bay Model Visitor Center twice within the last year. We went at the wrong time in both cases and we didn't go in. We had it planned this time and we triple checked the schedule before we went. We arrived at the town of Sausalito at around 1:30pm. We had a light lunch at a cafe there. We then spent about two hours in the Bay Model Visitor Center. It was an interesting place. It was quite educational to walk from the South Bay to Sausalito in two minutes while in real time it took us over a hour of driving. After we left, we stopped at Union Square. The twins visited the Disney Store there because they said it was bigger than the one in Valleyfair mall. The twins walked around the store for a while and lost interest very quickly. The mind had wandered to the BORDERS bookstore next door. When we went to the bookstore, they went straight to the kids section looking for the W.I.T.C.H. chapter books. They wanted us to buy them two books each. We were okay with the books because they really were motivated to read them and they loved the same TV series on Toon Disney Channel too. Besides the books were rated age 9-12. It was a good sign that the twins are reading above their reading level. However, they both knew clearly that mommy wouldn't let them buy the graphic novel version of the same title because we wanted them to read chapter books instead of comic. We also walked around the area before having a Japanese dinner at one of the restaurants. On the way back, the twins took a nap in the car. They were all charged up when we came home. They practiced piano before going to bed. Before bedtime, they shelved their new books in their room. They reported that they had 10 out of the 17 in the series. They looked forward to collect all of them. Given each book cost $4.95, it would cost us $85 for the set. I heard the 18th book was coming out soon.

The clock rolled back to standard time in the early morning hour. The summer daylight saving time had ended. We got one extra hour to sleep. The twins adjusted their own clocks and watches after they learned about the change. We went out to lunch with Terence's, Benjamin's and Christopher's family. Christopher's parents were treating us. We went to a pumpkin patch after lunch. The kids spent some time playing with the hay bales, corn stalks and pumpkins. Each kid bought a small pumpkin for decoration.
We invited the families over to play in our home. Everyone except Christopher's family had prior engagement. The kids played a Neopet board game they received as gift from Terence. Joanne cheated and gave Christopher a 1000 NP coin to make him the winner. The adults sang some karaoke while the kids played. It took daddy half an hour to rearrange the wiring because we had not use the machine for years. The kids later took over the TV to play video games. In the evening, we went out to Pasta Pomodoro for dinner before the guests went home.
The twins came home and read their new books and practice some piano before bedtime.

It was Halloween. There was no school for the kids. It was a "teacher learning" day at school, the kids needed to leave the teachers alone. Mommy moved the twins Tuesday's piano lesson to this morning because mommy would have a tennis match tomorrow. We invited several families to our house for a Halloween party starting at 4pm. Annette's family arrived the earliest and the kids got to play in the backyard before it was dark. The guests arrived in waves. We started the dinner at around 6:30pm. The kids were excited and rushed to the door whenever the trick or treaters rang the door bell. At around 7pm, the kids all went out to the neighborhood to do trick or treating. They all returned within half an hour, but they all seemed very satisfied thought I thought they would stay out longer. The kids resumed their play and video game. The party ended before 9pm because all the kids had school the next day. The door bell continued to ring for a while after the party. The twins wanted to give out candies, but we sent them upstairs to take a shower instead. We turned off the lights and the door bell stopped ringing. We sent them to bed for the night. One regret of the night: everyone was busy having fun and no one took any pictures.

The twins finished all the homework early. They were allowed to watch some TV after they practiced piano. They chose to watch Super Nanny on ABC. There was a set of twins in today's episode, which sparked the their interest.
After their show, the stayed to watch a concert with daddy. Joanne fell asleep on the sofa. Jasmine woke her up and told her to go to bed with her. Jasmine picked up some child caring skill from the Super Nanny show. :-)
Saturday, Nov 5, 2005 (8y+2m+30d)
Mommy went to play tennis in the morning. We had an appointment with a handyman to repair some termite damage in the shed in the yard. We stayed home in the morning. Cyrus called and invite the twins to play in his house. He had asked so many times before, mommy finally let the twins go there today. We were tied up at home because of the repair work, it would be unfair to strand the twins at home. Mommy dropped them off at 2pm and picked them up about 3 hours later. After dinner, we watched Star Wars Episode V together. When the twins went to bed, they played with their bears on the bed until daddy came in to turn off their lights.
