Tintern was founded in the 12th century for cistercian monks. At the time of the dissolution of Monasteries by Henry the 8th in 1536, Tintern was the richest abbey in Wales There is good car parking with toilets, gift shop and across the road an old inn where you can obtain meals. The abbey stands in beautiful forest surroundings on the banks of the River Wye, and there is a footpath for walks or a picnic. Further along the main road are some more shops selling a range of gifts, antiques, and refreshments. |
