Sign posted in Tretower village, off the A479 5km N.West of Crickhowell Near Abergavenny, you will find the remains of Tretower castle. The remains of this castle stands in open countryside against the backdrop of the Brecon Beacons. The great 13th century stone keep surmounts a small mound, the remains of Tretower's original earthwork castle built around 1100 to control a srategic route through the Black Mountains. Standing next to the tower is a fine example of a late medieval manor house. The galleried courtyard is entered through a stone gatehouse reminiscent of the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge. Outside is a recreated medieval garden. |
