| Oxwich Castle |

| This castle is located on a woody headland above Oxwich Bay on the Gower Peninsular. Although probably standing on the site of an early fortification, it is not really a "castle" but a Tudor manor, a product of the peaceful 16th century. Its creator Sir Rice Mansell gave the manor a mock- military gateway. Sir Rice's work began on the southern block in the 1520s and was later by his son. Sir Edward Mansell who created a much grander eastern block around the 1560s ~ 1580. It comprised of an impressive hall and long gallery which was a fashionable Elizabethan feature. The southeastern six storey tower still stands today, and provided the accomodation for the family and servants. After the Mansell family left in the 1630s, the buildings fell into disrepair, though the south section was later used as a farm house. FACILITIES include PARKING / TOILETS/ SHOP.
