This castle located on the shores of the Tywi estuary in the village of Llansteffan, was built in the early 12th century by the Normans. The castle is reached from a pathway from the beach.
Though most of this once fine castle is now in ruins, there are a few structures fairly intact.
Perhaps the best preserved is the Inner Gate which at one time was the main entrance into the castle.

Pictured left is the Great Gatehouse which was added in the 13th century.
It is a three storey structure with two large 'D shaped towers' and two smaller inward facing turrets.
The original entrance to the gatehouse was blocked 200 yrs after it's construction.
During the 15th century modifications were made to change its role from a formidable defensive structure to residential rooms.
