Last Month You Met Mr. T - Now 16 Fills You In On His Co-Stars: "The Face" and "Howling Mad" Murdock! Dirk Benedict
With his combination of blond 'n blue-eyed good looks, Dirk Benedict fits his character perfectly as The A-Team's "Face" (Templeton Peck). Although the 38-year-old actor was not in the original pilot (Tim Dunigan had the part), he soon made himself right at home on the show. Since then, that action-packed series has more than captured your heart - it's also captured the ratings! A native of Helena, Montana, he was christened Dirk Niewoehner (pronounced Nee-ven-er) before changing it at his agent's request. It seems the two were having breakfast and the menu said, Eggs Benedict, "l not only ate them, l made it my name," he jokes! Dirk worked in the theater prior to doing TV work. His first taste of acting came in his freshman year at college some football buddies dared him to audition for a musical - he not only won the part, but it also turned his life around; he decided to make acting his career! Soon after graduation he acted in summer stock and Broadway theatre and then landed roles in movies such as Georgia, Georgia, SSSSS and Ruckus. In 1974, Dirk made his first appearance in a TV series as a helicopter policeman in Chopper One. Four years later, Dirk would once again be "up in the air," but this time, a bit further up - in space that is - as Lt. Starbuck in Battlestar Galactlca. Dirk is single and lives in Los Angeles. His favorite pastimes are snow skiing and fly-fishing (for trout, with artificial flies!) and he loves to dance on a night out. He claims that a healthy look in a girl is what first catches his eye and her ability to have fun is what keeps him interested. Although he enjoys his role as "The Face" on his current hit series The A-Team, Dirk also plans to do films and possibly some more theater work, so you know you'll be seeing lots more of this talented guy! He may play the wacky "Howling Mad" Murdock on TV, but Dwight Schultz is far from being a lunatic in real life. An experienced stage actor, brown-eyed Dwight has been performing in the theater ever since his college days. After receiving his degree in Theater Arts, he performed in Maryland (his native state) with the Baltimore Theater Ensemble for two years. From there he moved on to New York, acting in several off-Broadway plays, including The Water Engine which later moved to Broadway. At this time, Dwight started gaining some well deserved recognition and after a successful run with Broadway's Crucifer of Blood, TV appearances naturally followed. You may remember seeing him in shows such as Hill Street Blues and CHiPs. However, it was the theater, not TV that finally landed him on The A-Team. While performing in the Boston area, he caught the attention of an NBC talent scout. Dwight was invited to come to California for an audition, and after countless readings, the producer finally said, "Welcome To The A-Team.'" He was signed to play "Howling Mad" Murdock with a zany cast of characters that includes B.A. (Bad Attitude) Baracus (Mr. T), Hannibal Smith (George Peppard), and of course "The Face." The 6'2", 175 Ib. Dwight currently lives in New York - or Los Angeles, depending on his work - and may soon settle down. with his actress fiancee, Wendy Fulton, who you may remember as Muffin on NBC-TV's Bare Essence. The two met on a blind date and according to Wendy, it was only after their second date that she realized there was something special about Dwight. Though the busy twosome hasn't had much time together, their relatlonship has flourished and as soon as both have enough time off, they plan to get married.
